Wondering if your tired days could be sleep apnea? The first step is finding out.

A sleep study looks at what happens while you sleep, including your breathing. It's how obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is confirmed - through testing, not guesswork.

If you're wondering whether it's worth looking into, consider whether any of this sounds familiar: being told you snore loudly, waking up with headaches, or feeling tired even after a full night in bed.

Feeling tired all the time is easy to brush off. But when the cause is sleep apnea, it's worth understanding why it matters.

With obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), your breathing repeatedly pauses or slows while you sleep, and your brain briefly wakes you to restart it. You may not remember any of it, but the quality of your sleep takes the hit. Over time, poor-quality sleep can affect your energy, mood, focus, memory and daily performance. Untreated OSA is also associated with other health concerns, which is one more reason to find out what's behind ongoing tiredness.

The good news: sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated.

"I'm not overweight, so it can't be me."

It's one of the most common things people say about sleep apnea - and it's one of the biggest reasons it goes unchecked.

Body weight is one risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it isn't the only one. Airway anatomy, age, family history, nasal congestion, alcohol or sedative use and certain medical conditions can all play a role. OSA can affect people of different ages, body types and backgrounds.

What matters more than whether you fit a "type" is how you're sleeping and feeling. If you're regularly tired, waking unrefreshed or sleeping poorly, it's worth looking at the whole picture and talking to a healthcare professional.

You don't have to guess. A sleep study can help assess what's happening while you sleep.

SLEEP APNEA 101 | PART 4 💤

Is snoring just snoring?

Sometimes, yes.

Snoring is common and doesn't automatically mean you have sleep apnea. But frequent or loud snoring can be one of the signs of obstructive sleep apnea, particularly when it's accompanied by things like gasping, choking, pauses in breathing or excessive daytime sleepiness.

And here's the tricky part: you may not be the person who notices it.

A bed partner or family member may be the first to notice loud snoring, changes in breathing or pauses during the night.

If persistent snoring is affecting you (or someone sleeping beside you) it may be worth finding out what's behind it.

SLEEP APNEA 101 | PART 3 💤

Could you have sleep apnea and not know it?

It's possible.

Because obstructive sleep apnea happens while you're asleep, you may not realize that your breathing is being interrupted throughout the night. Sometimes, it's a partner or family member who notices the snoring, gasping or pauses in breathing first.

But the signs don't always happen while you're sleeping.

Waking up feeling unrefreshed, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating and brain fog can all be signs that your sleep isn't as restorative as it should be.

Of course, these symptoms can have many causes, and having one of them doesn't necessarily mean you have sleep apnea. A sleep study can help determine what's actually happening while you sleep.

SLEEP APNEA 101 | PART 2 💤

So, what actually happens when you have obstructive sleep apnea?

While you're asleep, the muscles around your airway can relax and cause it to become narrowed or blocked. When this happens, your breathing can stop or become significantly reduced.

Your brain senses the change and briefly brings you out of deeper sleep so you can start breathing again.

Then you go back to sleep… and the cycle can repeat throughout the night.

The tricky part? You may not even realize it's happening.

That's why someone can spend 7–8 hours in bed and still wake up feeling exhausted, foggy or unrefreshed.

In the next part of our Sleep Apnea 101 series, we'll look at some of the signs and symptoms that are easy to overlook.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) could be one reason.
