We are so excited to introduce the newest member of our Village, Tera! 💚

Tera joins our team as a Personal Support Worker (PSW), bringing over 15 years of experience supporting individuals and families in their homes.

With her years of experience in home care, Tera understands how important it is for people to feel comfortable, respected, and supported while maintaining their independence.

At The Village, we believe that great care goes beyond helping with daily tasks. It's about building relationships, offering companionship, and making everyday life a little easier for the people and families we support.

🌿 Thinking About Therapy? Not Sure What to Expect?

Starting therapy can feel a little intimidating, especially if you've never been before.

What do I talk about? Will it be awkward? Do I have to share everything? What if I don't even know what's wrong?

These are all really common questions!

The truth is, therapy doesn't have to look a certain way. Some sessions involve difficult conversations, some involve learning new skills, and sometimes there's even a lot of laughter.

You don't need to have the right words, know exactly what you want to work on, or share your whole life story in the first appointment.

A good therapeutic relationship takes time to build, and finding someone you feel comfortable with matters. 💚

At The Village Wellness Services, we offer free 15-minute consultations so you can ask questions and see if one of our therapists might be a good fit.

❤️ Your partner can't meet a need they don't know you have.

Let's talk about intimacy, s*x, and the conversations we sometimes avoid having in relationships.

We all experience intimacy differently. Some of us need physical affection, some need emotional connection, some want more s*x, and others need quality time, conversation, or simply to feel noticed.

And here's the tricky part — what makes us feel loved, wanted, or connected isn't always what makes our partner feel that way.

Sometimes we create an entire conflict in our heads without our partner even knowing it's happening.

Sound familiar? 😂

You want your partner to cuddle you on the couch. They sit at the other end, scrolling on their phone.

You start thinking...

Why aren't they coming over here?

Do they even want to spend time with me?

I'm always the one who has to initiate affection.

Before you know it, you're feeling rejected, disappointed, and maybe even a little angry.

You go to bed upset.

Meanwhile, your partner has absolutely no idea that the two of you just had an argument. 😅

We sometimes expect our partners to recognize our needs without us having to communicate them. And when they don't, we interpret that as a lack of interest or care.

But wanting something and communicating that we want it are two very different things.

💚 "Can we cuddle for a bit?"

💚 "I've been missing some one-on-one time with you."

💚 "I'd love for us to make more time for intimacy."

💚 "I'm not really looking for s*x tonight, but I'd love some affection."

💚 "What helps you feel wanted and connected to me?"

Intimacy isn't about having identical needs. It's about understanding each other's needs and finding ways to connect that feel good for both people.

And communicating a need doesn't mean our partner is obligated to meet it every time. It means we're giving each other an opportunity to understand, respond, and work together.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do for our relationships is stop expecting our partners to read our minds.

Say it out loud. Give your partner a chance to show up for you. ❤️

🌿 Burnout: What does it actually look like?

Burnout doesn't always look like someone who can't get out of bed.
Sometimes it looks like someone who is still showing up, working, parenting, maintaining relationships and getting everything done.

But underneath it all, they're exhausted.

Burnout can look like:
- 🧠 Brain fog, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.
- 😴 Feeling exhausted even after sleeping.
- 😤 Becoming irritable, impatient or easily overwhelmed.
- 💚 Feeling emotionally disconnected from people or things you normally enjoy.
- 📉 Losing motivation or feeling less effective at work.
- 🤕 More headaches, muscle tension or changes in sleep.
- 🚪 Wanting to withdraw because even small interactions feel like too much.

And here's something important:
You can still be functioning and be struggling.

How long does burnout take to recover from?
There isn't one universal recovery timeline.

Some people begin feeling better after meaningful rest and changes to their workload. Others experience symptoms for months, especially when chronic stress continues.

Recovery isn't just about taking time off.

It's about understanding what has been draining you, reducing ongoing stressors where possible, rebuilding your capacity for rest, and gradually returning to a more sustainable routine.

You can't always recover from burnout by taking a break and returning to the exact same conditions that created it.

And perhaps the most important reminder:
You don't have to wait until you completely fall apart to recognize that something needs to change.

🍂 A little Thanksgiving message from all of us at The Village. 🧡

As the Thanksgiving weekend comes to an end, we hope it was everything you needed it to be.

Whether you were surrounded by family and friends, tucked away enjoying some quiet time to yourself, out in nature, or simply catching up on some much-needed rest — we hope you found a little time to slow down, recharge, and do something that filled your cup.

Holidays look different for everyone, and sometimes the best way to spend them is simply doing what feels right for you. 💛

Here at The Village, we have so much to be thankful for.

We are especially grateful for the wonderful community we have the privilege of serving. Thank you to the individuals and families who welcome us into their lives, share their stories with us, trust us with their care, and allow us to be part of their journeys.

We are also incredibly thankful for our team — a group of people who bring their own personalities, experiences, strengths, and genuine care to the work they do every day.

We hope you head into this new week feeling a little more rested, connected, and cared for.

From all of us at The Village Wellness Services, Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁

🌿 Meet Michelle — PSW

If you’re looking for evening, overnight or weekend PSW support, Michelle currently has some availability with The Village.

Michelle provides care throughout the Belleville to Brighton area and is available:
🌙 Evenings & nights
📅 Every other weekend

Michelle is what we lovingly call a workhorse. 😂 She shows up, works hard, and takes the responsibility of caring for her clients seriously.
One of the things we appreciate most about Michelle is her genuine concern that her clients receive the care they need. If something changes or there is a concern about coverage, Michelle is thinking about the person on the other end of that schedule — not just the shift.

She can provide support with things like:
💚 Personal care and daily routines
💚 Companionship and supervision
💚 Respite for family caregivers
💚 Meal preparation and light household support
💚 Evening and bedtime routines
💚 Maintaining independence and comfort at home

For families trying to piece together care outside of traditional daytime hours, evening and weekend availability can make a huge difference.

If you're looking for private PSW support between Belleville and Brighton, reach out to The Village to learn more about Michelle and arrange a meet-and-greet.

🍭 What actually happens to your brain when you eat sugar?

Your brain needs glucose for energy — so sugar itself isn't the enemy.

But the amount we consume, how often we consume it, and what the rest of our diet looks like can matter.

🧠 Sugar and carbohydrates interact with systems involved in energy, cognition and reward. Interestingly, the popular idea of a “sugar rush” isn't strongly supported by research. A meta-analysis found that carbohydrate consumption did not improve mood and was actually associated with greater fatigue and reduced alertness within the first hour (Mantantzis et al., 2019).

Research looking at sugar and brain functioning also suggests that the picture changes depending on whether we're looking at an immediate dose of glucose or someone's diet over time. A systematic review of 77 human studies found that while glucose can sometimes temporarily support certain cognitive tasks, higher long-term intake of added sugars was generally associated with poorer cognitive outcomes (Gillespie et al., 2024).

🍬 What about mental health?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than 1.2 million participants found that higher sugar consumption was associated with greater odds of depression. However, this does not mean sugar causes depression — mental health is influenced by many biological, psychological, social and lifestyle factors (Xiong et al., 2024).

So we're not going to tell you:
❌ “Sugar is bad.”
❌ “Don't eat the cookie.”

Instead, we're interested in the bigger picture.
Are we eating regularly? Are we getting protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and fibre? Are we sleeping? Drinking enough water? Moving our bodies? How stressed are we?

Because mental health isn't about eliminating one food.

It's about understanding that the brain is part of the body — and how we care for our body can be one part of supporting our mental health. 🌿

Why do we yell? 😬

Usually, yelling isn't where the reaction started.

It started when we were tired.
Overstimulated.
Frustrated.
Feeling unheard.
Already carrying too much.

Then someone we love does one more thing… and out it comes.

Here's the tricky part:
Dysregulation is contagious. But so is calm.

This is co-regulation — and it matters with our kids, our partners, our families and even our friendships.

So instead of focusing only on “I need to stop yelling,” try learning what happens right before you yell.
Do you talk faster?
Clench your jaw?
Repeat yourself?
Feel your body getting hot?

That's your cue to slow things down.
Take a second. Lower your voice. Walk away if you need to.
And if you still yell?
Repair. Try again.

We don't need perfect regulation. We need more awareness of our own responses.

Dissociation can be a protective response. 🧠

For some people, it develops early in life when situations feel overwhelming, frightening, unpredictable, or unsafe.

When we can’t fight or get away, the brain may learn another option:

Disconnect.

Dissociation can look like:
• Feeling “zoned out” or far away
• Going on autopilot
• Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions
• Losing track of parts of a conversation
• Feeling like things around you aren’t quite real
• Having difficulty remembering parts of stressful experiences
• Feeling numb when you think you “should” feel something

The important part?

Your brain may have learned this response for a reason.

At one point, disconnecting may have helped you cope with something that felt too big to process. But sometimes our brain continues to use an old protective strategy — even when we don’t need it in the same way anymore.

So, let’s not get mad at our automatic responses.
They’re usually there for a reason.

Instead, we can get curious about them.

Understanding and awareness are often the first steps toward changing these patterns.

Therapy can help us understand our automatic responses, recognize when they’re happening, and slowly build new ways of feeling safe and staying present.

At The Village Wellness Services, we believe understanding the why behind a response can be just as important as changing it.

It takes a village. 🤍

Today, our Village team wears Orange. 🧡

We wear orange to honour the children who never came home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families, and the generations who continue to carry the impact.

As people who work in mental health, we know what happens in childhood matters. Safety matters. Connection matters. Being heard, protected, valued, and cared for matters.

Today is a day to listen, learn, reflect, and remember.

Every Child mattered then.
Every Child matters now. 🧡
