Many patients become anxious before an operation such as total hip arthroplasty (THA). Anxiety can affect a patients quality of life, from recovery to pain. Olanzapine is a antipsychotic with a rapid anxiolytic effect, allowing for a quick recovery after THA; making it the perfect medication to use. A study comparing olanzapine to a placebo was done in order to determine which would yield favourable results.

Over 15% of people present to the emergency department with orthopaedic injuries. However, many of these patients are triaged low and wait for extended periods of time, leading to a reduced health system performance and poorer quality of care. This trial, published last week in the Lancet, randomized patients presenting to the ER with an uncomplicated musculoskeletal condition to either physiotherapist-led care or physician/nurse practitioner-led care - to determine if physiotherapist-led care in the ER could result in better, faster care, and improved cost-effectiveness.

Randomized trial of 1,491 ED patients with uncomplicated musculoskeletal conditions found physiotherapist-led care cut length of stay by 1 hour, improved timeliness and satisfaction, and reduced costs.

Although hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid injections are well-studied for knee osteoarthritis, there is limited evidence for its use in treating hand osteoarthritis. In this weeks Pulse, we look at a meta-analysis in regards to which injection provides better treatment for long-term use.

For the first time, biodegradable bone glue was used on a patient during a knee surgery in England. This glue, made of calcium phosphate, phosphoserine, and mixed with water, hardens quickly and becomes extremely strong. In this case, the glue was tested and evaluated on a fracture near the joints.
