Tell me you didn’t stress about how the house looked when someone wanted to meet the new baby. Hide the dishes, put some crackers and a carrot on a plate, and call it charcuterie.
Meanwhile, you’re running on broken sleep, your hair could stay in its ponytail without the elastic, your diaper needs changing too, and the relative who HAS to meet the baby has arrived with the sniffles. WHY do we do this to ourselves?
Here’s the truth from a NICU RN and a mom of two boys: the newborn period can be hard and messy. It doesn’t always look like the glowing photos, and we need to leave room for that.
You’re not failing because the house is a mess or you need help. It’s okay to ask for support. It’s okay to cry about the big stuff and the small stuff, too. If anxiety or low mood feels overwhelming or isn’t easing, please reach out to your healthcare provider.
As an RN working with families in those first weeks, I see parents trying to put on a good show all the time. You don’t need to do that with me.
What if there were a nurse who could help you through newborn care, feeding, and pumping questions without judgment? Oh wait—it’s me!
