I no longer recommend vitamin D supplements, because sunlight does far more in your body than a capsule can.
When UVB reaches your skin, 7-dehydrocholesterol converts to previtamin D3, and your skin governs the process itself.
Once enough has formed, further light turns the excess into inactive lumisterol and tachysterol, which is why you cannot overdose on vitamin D from the sun.
That same light releases nitric oxide from your skin, lowering blood pressure, and stimulates beta-endorphin and alpha-MSH. A capsule delivers a single molecule with none of this regulation. Large trials, including VITAL and D-Health, found that supplementing vitamin D did not reduce cancer, heart disease or fractures.
A low blood level is a marker of how little time a person spends in the sun.
Your physiology is built to be seasonal. Summer’s long days and strong UVB build vitamin D stores in your fat tissue that carry you into autumn.
Winter’s long nights extend melatonin secretion from your pineal gland, and melatonin protects your mitochondria from oxidative damage and anchors your circadian rhythm.
Watch the sunrise every morning, build your sun exposure gradually through summer, and protect true darkness after sunset all year.
