“Just breathe.”
Great advice.…until breathing doesn’t feel that simple.
Breathing is automatic, but the way we breathe can be influenced by a whole collection of factors — including nasal airflow, oral posture, habits, muscle function, environment and more.
For functional nasal breathing, we’re looking at more than simply “nose vs. mouth.”
We’re interested in things like:
Can you comfortably breathe through your nose?
Can your lips rest together without strain?
Where does your tongue naturally rest?
Is your breathing quiet and comfortable?
Has your body simply learned a different breathing pattern?
And importantly, there isn’t one explanation for every person who mouth breathes.
Sometimes the first step isn’t “try harder to breathe through your nose.”
It’s figuring out what’s getting in the way.
That’s where assessment and individualized care come in.
Because sometimes “just breathe” deserves a little more explanation.
