Today we stand in solidarity with the First Nations and Indigenous communities across Canada.
As Canadians we have a responsibility to learn and acknowledge the brutal Colonial past of our country. These recent discoveries are not only a confirmation but a horrific reminder of the trauma indigenous communities have faced and continue to endure today. This is not ancient history and we must listen and support our First Nations communities as they have been telling us for decades and we as a nation have continued to fail them with our silence and inaction.
June was National Indigenous Month and to show our solidarity and support we have donated 5% of our sales for the month of June to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS).
We also encourage you to join us by:
🧡Educating ourselves about the history of our country- it is not the responsibility of the indigenous community to educate us. It is our duty to begin the process of learning and unlearning.
The University of Alberta offers a free course from the faculty of Native Studies. You can find the link in our bio.
🧡Teaching our children about our history- Canadian Indigenous children’s books May We Have Enough To Share by Richard Van Camp ,
I am not a number by Dr. Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer are just a couple great starting points.
🧡Give the Indigenous community space to grieve- it is time for us to truly listen and reflect on how we can show up off-line and in real life. Now is the time to amplify the voices of Indigenous and First Nation peoples, not our own.
🧡Support First Nation and Indigenous artists and artisans- @urban.iskwew is a London based artist who has beautiful colouring pages available for download and is the creator of the illustration above “Awareness Inspires Action” inspired by Alana Lee
🧡Show your support to the Indigenous community by demanding action from all levels of government- Please also consider donating to the IRSSS if you have the means to do so.
We recognize that the road to reconciliation is a long journey and will take much more then just a monetary donation but as a small business it is a small place where we can start.
