A colour bird sleeve: birds from Alberta, and a few she just loves

Big pieces don't have to happen all at once. This one grew over several sessions in Calgary. These photos are from 2024, and a gap at the wrist got filled at a guest spot that summer.

"Six hours of tattooing in one go? I couldn't sit that long." I hear this a lot when someone's thinking about a sleeve or a leg piece.

So this is how it goes. Day one starts with stencil placement. The stencil goes on, comes off, goes on again until it sits right. Then usually 3 to 5 hours of tattooing.

Every day after that is up to 5 and a half or 6 hours of tattooing, and you take breaks whenever you need them.

I book by the day rather than by the hour, so there's never a clock running while you sit. That's the whole reason I set it up that way.

The Cornell case has been sitting heavy with me and women nationwide... I've been through the legal system myself, to put an ex-partner in jail. And almost every woman in my life has faced violence or assault.

She couldn't snap back. So the correction has to come from the rest of us.

Why does a correction take years?
Why do we still say "keep it private" and "think of his reputation"?
Why doesn't it feel safe to go to the police, or to stay with a lawsuit?
Who is beside her while she waits?

My mom was a piercer in Kelowna, so I spent my after-school hours in a tattoo shop.
Then an apprenticeship, Edinburgh, Calgary, and back to Vancouver Island for family and the ocean. So, Duncan. That's why!
