Yes it is that time a year- September, a return to routine. The time of September which gives off January fresh-start vibes, with less pressure, more pretty colours/hues in nature and more sunshine. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฅฎ๐Ÿ

And maybe this is the time of a year where you return to a routine, or itโ€™s the time to prioritize yourself and start/return to therapy.

โ€ฆmaybe itโ€™s the vibe to start therapy now now versus prolonging the start to a later season when the daylight is shorter, the weather is colder, road conditions are less than ideal and the best vibe is the desire to hibernate and stay at home. (Ahhhh gotta love Alberta Winters!)

โ€ฆand maybe now is the time with a few months left before insurance benefits renew.

Starting therapy is uniquely individual, around readiness, motivation and circumstances, including extrinsic ones like โ€œthe time of yearโ€.

HOT TAKE: Grief doesnโ€™t have a look. Here, I am on a hike where conflicting emotions were coming and going around a loss that occurred a few years prior. Grief shows up whenever or wherever, even when hiking a mountain. Sometimes it comes predictably like clockwork or by anniversary. But many times, there is no rhyme and no reason for its presence. And like here, not technically visible with a look of sadness.

Another hot take: This author Josie Balka-Young speaks of overwhelm and hope. My interpretation of her words is highlighting individual resilience and promoting perseverance through individualism, not connection

My personal & professional hot take is resilience and perseverance will come, but when grief around loss is new and overwhelming, it is okay to co-regulate the heaviness with someone. We are wired to do hard things, but not alone

So yes, I did end up okay and I did figure โ€œitโ€ out, but only by leaning on others for much of the journey.

And yes, grief did seem impossible and it did end up working out, not because the circumstances changed in my favour but by having patience and compassion for the unwanted change.

And yes, I did survive. Not by relying on own strengths and doing it alone, but by knowing deeply that in moments of overwhelm, itโ€™s okay to ask for help, to accept the help, talk to a therapist, talk about changes in day to day moments or in traditions and the emotions that come with it. I survived BECAUSE of community and accepting help.

And yes, I did have worry in my own grief and I wouldnโ€™t say it wasnโ€™t worth it. When we worry in grief, itโ€™s usually connected to something important, like love. So in my opinion, love IS worth it.

And yes, my worry worked itself out because I didnโ€™t keep it to myself but I talked it out. I shared my uncertainty without receiving reassurance, and my worry got lighter.

And yes, there was a light at the end of the tunnel and I did have a choice. I did choose the light by sharing my grief, by accepting support and having patience for myself & the timeline.

You may only see me in the reel, but the face of grief & mourning is community. I ended up okay because of CONNECTION.

This older millennial therapist is jumping on a trend she didnโ€™t know was a trend until her cooler colleagues Jada Elexcia โ˜ฏ๏ธŽ Acu | Fertility + Cosmetic Acu Calista Powell did something similar.

With maternal mental health hitting many peopleโ€™s algorithms these days, awareness for perinatal mental health, the need to shift away from hyper normalization of postpartum struggles, destigmatization of asking for help has become a priority.

Hopefully not a priority that lasts just for this moment. But long enough for glaring gaps to be named, like systemic changes around underfunding & under resourcing, increased pressure to have PMADS acknowledged as a requirement (not a speciality) in psychiatric and mental health care, is acknowledged in future DSMs and more money put towards public education & perinatal research.

Because THAT would be really CHIC!

With the slower summer months, I have some availabilities within my Sherwood Park schedule for new individual adult or couple clients!

For individuals, I work from a feminist intersectional lens using frameworks of EMDR, ACT & EFIT. And if I can squeeze in some psychoed on attachment, I will try!

For couples, I work from an EFCT (Emotionally Focused Couples) lens and there too I love helping couples clients understand attachment and attachment distress within their conflict cycle.

These inequities show up in research, representation around policy/law making, education and then intervention. But change is happening to fill in the gaps, but thatโ€™s because women are making it happen and using their voice!

Crying is natural self-regulation and so common and natural within therapy.

And it would be a free and early Christmas gift (lol) to hear anyone reframe their tears as a natural, sensitive super power that helps us understand ourselves and our world.

Thinking of many people who are navigating grief and loss during the holiday season. New Years can be bittersweet for many grievers because itโ€™s a day that symbolizes a new chapter that they solidifies their loss and leaving behind a familiar chapter. If you are noticing resistance in moving to the next year, this is grief and loss. Sending comfort if you are

โœจGrieving the end of a relationship
โœจGrieving a loved one who died
โœจGrieving your health and a new diagnosis
โœจGrieving traditions of the holiday season of years past that couldnโ€™t happen this year.
โœจGrieving the many other losses that life sends us.

It is okay if you arenโ€™t able to be joyous for NYE and the beginnings of 2026. You arenโ€™t alone.

Today is our Winter Solstice, meaning we are halfway done our winter! In the northern hemisphere, today is our shortest day of sunlight, meaning our days will be getting longer with increasing daylight!

While this can give many a hopeful surge of energy, I wanted to reflect on Mother Nature and how she has set up this season to be. During the deep part of our winter, Mother Nature has wisely integrated slowness, rest and going inwards into nature, including many of her hibernating animals. While the other seasons can be full of energy and productivity, she puts into the calendar year peace and rest as a valuable energy reset.

So with the upcoming the busyness of holidays and the pressure of New Years Resolutions, wintering reminders may be necessary. Wintering is metaphorically for humans to describe a necessary, restful, and reflective period of retreat.

Swipe to learn more ideas on wintering. But if this season feels to lonely or overwhelming to attain parts of wintering, please know you arenโ€™t alone. Itโ€™s okay to ask for help.

Since I was young, Iโ€™ve been told I was so good with children, that the ultimate conclusion & message was I was going to be such a good mom when I grow up.

And that was the message reinforced by many people, sources of influence (ie patriarchal media) and society. And I remember receiving only that message over decades of my life.

It wasnโ€™t until I met while holding her baby that I was told I would be a great psychologist with those caregiving skills. Those caregiving skills were my passion around infant mental health and attachment.

That simple message opened up possibilities to reflect on whether I WANTED to be a mom, while grieving the missed opportunities of messaging I could have received about my caregiving skills. Subsequently, I was able to reflect on my limits, while being curious around what are the alternatives of loving children without reproducing my own? Wellโ€ฆ there are plenty and when I settled on that openness, a relief entered my body and I was at peace with not rushing my life and enjoying the moments in front of me.

Ultimately, having children is such a deeply personal choice and never should be something to assume one should do. No matter what. I share this self-disclosure through this trend to humanize the multilayered value of children, as I am honoured to navigate these deeply personal choices with individuals in their own perinatal journey.
