Happy Thanksgiving from the ABVMA!

As you gather around the table this weekend, remember that some holiday foods aren’t safe for pets. Keep the feast for the people and tempting treats out of paw’s reach.

This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the veterinary professionals across Alberta who care for animals and help support the health of our communities every day.

Wishing you a safe, relaxing weekend with the people and pets you love.

World Mental Health Day | October 10

The bond we share with animals can be an important part of our mental health and wellbeing. For many people, pets bring comfort, companionship and connection. When an animal becomes ill, is injured or dies, the impact can extend beyond the animal to the people who love and care for them.

These connections are part of what makes veterinary care about more than an animal’s physical health. Veterinary professionals also see the emotional impact that caring for an animal can have on clients, which is one reason the human-animal bond matters in conversations about wellbeing.

Veterinary social work recognizes this connection, bringing an understanding of human needs and experiences into veterinary settings.

This World Mental Health Day, we recognize the important relationship between animal health and human wellbeing, and the role the veterinary profession plays in supporting both.

National Depression Screening Day | October 8

A healthy veterinary profession includes supporting the mental health and well-being of the people who work in it.

National Depression Screening Day is an opportunity to take a moment and check in with yourself. If you’ve noticed changes in your mood, energy, sleep or interest in the things you normally enjoy, a screening can be a useful starting point.

The Calgary Counselling Centre offers a free, anonymous questionnaire.

Take the questionnaire:

As World Mental Health Day approaches, we encourage veterinary professionals to make mental health part of the conversation around a sustainable profession.

It’s RVT Month!

This month, we’re celebrating the Registered Veterinary Technologists who play such an important role in veterinary care.

RVTs bring knowledge, technical skill, compassion and a steady presence to the work. They care for patients through routine visits, challenging procedures and everything in between. They support their colleagues, connect with clients and help make quality patient care possible.

For RVT Month, we asked a few of our Council members to share what RVTs mean to their practice and the difference they make every day. Their answers are a small glimpse into the many ways RVTs contribute to veterinary teams and the profession.

To every RVT: thank you for the expertise, care and commitment you bring to your work. We’re proud to celebrate you this month and always.

Happy RVT Month!

Today, we pause to reflect on the land we live and work on, the treaties and agreements that shape our communities, and the histories, cultures, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

For the ABVMA, this is also a time to reflect on the role the veterinary profession can play in reconciliation.

We have developed our Truth and Reconciliation strategy to guide our work toward greater awareness, understanding and meaningful action across the veterinary profession. The strategy is organized around six key areas: leadership, education, recognition, allyship, access and commitment.

We are now focused on putting the strategy into action and advancing this work throughout Alberta. The veterinary profession has an important role to play in building respectful relationships and supporting culturally appropriate care for First Nations, Inuit and Métis clients.

There is much to learn, and reconciliation is ongoing work.

Did you know pets can be exposed to rabies through contact with wildlife?

The Alberta Rabies Program reports that unvaccinated cats catching bats account for the largest number of rabies-related calls they receive each year.

Over the past five years, about 2–5% of bats tested annually have been positive for rabies. Keeping your pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date can help protect them if they encounter an infected animal.

Talk to your veterinarian about keeping your pet’s rabies vaccination up to date, and contact your veterinary clinic if your pet has been in contact with a bat or other wildlife.
