What actually happens at a screening mammogram, for anyone who’d like to know before they go.
First, which kind. A screening mammogram is for people with no symptoms, and from 40 you can book it yourself through BreastCheck. If something has changed, you need a diagnostic mammogram instead. Your provider orders it, and it takes more detailed pictures.
The morning of: skip deodorant, antiperspirant, body lotion and powder. They can show up on the image. Screening sites are scent-free too. Wear a two-piece outfit, because you only change from the waist up.
When you arrive, you’ll answer a few health questions and change into a gown. A medical radiation technologist takes two pictures of each breast. Each one means a few seconds of firm pressure between two plates. It can be uncomfortable. It’s quick, and the program confirms it’s safe.
If your breasts are tender before your period, book a different week if you can. If it hurts, say so. They can adjust.
The whole appointment takes 10 to 20 minutes. Results come by mail in about two weeks and show up in MySaskHealthRecord.
Book with BreastCheck at 1-855-584-8228. No referral needed from 40, if you have no breast symptoms and no implants.
