A dark or bruised-looking toenail can be alarming—but often there’s a simple explanation.
Blood can collect underneath the nail after trauma or repeated pressure. And it doesn’t always take a dramatic injury!
👟 Shoes that are too tight
🏃 Repetitive pressure from walking or running
🪑 Stubbing or bumping your toe
🥾 Long periods in work boots or hiking shoes
📦 Dropping something on your toe
As the toenail grows, the discolouration will often gradually move forward with the nail—but toenails grow slowly, so this can take months.
Not sure if it’s actually a bruise?
Not every dark toenail is caused by trauma. Changes in nail colour or appearance that don't have an obvious explanation—or aren't growing out as expected—should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare provider.
At Fergus Foot Care, we don't just trim toenails. Our nurses monitor the health of your feet and can help identify concerns that may need further assessment.
