Colostrum, a baby’s first milk is…
💧nutrient dense
💧highly concentrated
💧has laxative properties to help pass meconium
💧builds a strong immune system
💧immunologic properties to protect and fight illness
💧helps establish a health gut microbiome

Colostrum begins to be produced and stored in the breast around 16 weeks of pregnancy. The birth of the placenta allows for the milk ejection reflux to secrete the milk with stimulation.
The flow of colostrum is slow while allowing baby to learn to coordinate and regulate their suck, swallow and breath coordination during feeding.
It is frequent skin-to-skin and removal of colostrum 8-10 times in the first 24-48 hours that helps to establish and maintain milk supply throughout a breastfeeding journey. The more stimulation the breast get in the early postpartum stage helps promote a high prolactin (milk making hormone) state. Periods longer than 3 hours between breast stimulation and colostrum removal decreases prolactin levels affecting long term milk supply levels.
Successful skin-to-skin and breastfeeding in the first hour after birth sets the stage for long-term breastfeeding success and for appropriate milk supply levels.

Does this photo look like your house today?
Mine sure does, actually this is calmer reality of my house if I am truly being honest.
I had a friend tell me “deep breathe, you will figure it out” after both kids had meltdowns this morning.
No matter what stage of parenthood we are in, we have our challenges and we manage them.
A quick walk outside with the dog and a chance to finish my coffee and a deep breathe, my daughters and I made it through the morning.
If you need to chat or vent, I am here, no mater what stage any of us are going through.

Pacifiers!

The answer to this question is filled with many grey areas. Pacifier use has many pros and cons.

👍soothe a crying infant
👍reduce pain while suck on a pacifier
👍for preterm babies, it can help them learn their suck, swallow, breathe coordination sooner to get off tube feedings sooner
👍may help reduce the risk of SIDS

👎May affect the formation of teeth
👎May increase possibility of ear infections
👎May decrease milk supply
👎May cause breastfeeding difficulties

Pacifiers can help parents and infants through periods of crying when baby needs to comfort with sucking when you know that baby has been fed and is not hungry.

If you would like to breast feed, a pacifier may hide feeding cues that can decrease the number of feeds that the baby needs to have to meet their needs leading to

➡️ less than 8 feeds in 24 hours
➡️ infant weight loss
➡️ painful latch
➡️ decrease milk supply
➡️ increase need for supplementation

If you make an educated and informed decision to use a pacifier make sure to

👉 know your baby’s hunger cues
👉 ensure your baby gets 8-12 feeds in 24 hrs
👉 one piece pacifier
👉 do not hang the pacifier on a string around baby’s neck
👉 do not dip the pacifier in sugar, honey or any other sugary things
👉 clean (and sterilize until 6 months) regularly
👉 replace it if any wear & tear or damage
👉 talk to your HCP at one year to discuss weaning from the pacifier

Your journey is just beginning!

There is not one path to follow. You make your own path and find your way with family and friends by your size. You may even find some professional friends along the way in your journey.

If your journey finds some bumps in the road that you may need guidance, I might be able to help you along.

It’s okay to take a break!

Something that’s seems so easy, but is so easy to forget to do.

As parents, especially in the early days, we forget about ourselves.

Every morning set a break goal for yourself, whether that break is

🛁 to take a shower or bath
🚶‍♀️ go for a walk
📖 read a book/paragraph/phrase
🧘‍♀️ meditate or yoga

📲 Contact for her pregnancy, mom and baby yoga or a meditation session.

Find your break!

You need it and deserve it!

Parenting has changed greatly since the 1970’s where present day Statistics Canada reports that 25% of fathers are taking parental leave.
Transition to parenthood is not one sided. It is not just the mothers but also their partners. Finding ways to help the transition for all parents is important.
Playtime, cuddling, skin-to-skin and comforting babies is important in the development for parenthood as well as in attachment and bonding for both parents with their baby.
Playing, reading, singing and talking to baby are important for both parents in the early years.

This is so true!

Today I feel I am one step closer to missing my oldest child’s hand around mine as she goes for her Grade 9 orientation.

She know my hand and my arms and ALWAYS my heart will be there for her every step of the way!

Being a mother has many stepping stones that change paths constantly and grows as your babies grow, but there is always a path.

Some paths you find together like your first few weeks after the baby and then, like now, I feel our paths are together but spaced enough that we can still touch hands when needed.

One day I know our paths will come to a fork in the road where we cannot reach fingertips but our hearts will always be together.

Parenthood is a journey!

If you need any help with your journey, no matter where you are on your path, reach out!

If I cannot help you, I will know someone who can!

You are never alone!

You will always have someone to hold your hand!
