The Honourable Brian Comer, the minister responsible for the Office of Addictions and Mental Health, stopped by the Dal Centre for Psychological Health (CPH) earlier this week to chat with some of our clinical psychology students. Students from all levels of the program shared their experiences and discussed the successes and challenges of their work.

CPH provides valuable clinical psychology training opportunities for our students and serves low-income clients, particularly Nova Scotians who face barriers in accessing mental health services.

With 43 students currently in the program and 270 clients served since June last year, we're proud of the impact CPH is making in the community!

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a group of noninvasive psychophysical tests that are sometimes used in research to learn more about people's responses to pain.

As part of her graduate work, Dr. Perri Tutelman, now at the University of Calgary, led a scoping review of the published literature that has used QST in children and adolescents to find out more how this testing is being used in research!

QST with children and adolescents is a new and rapidly growing area of research - find out more by reading the paper (open access and free to read): https://journals.lww.com/painrpts/fulltext/2024/06000/quantitative_sensory_testing_for_assessment_of.2.aspx

Introducing the PREP (Parent Responses to Everyday Pains) research questionnaire!

Everyday pains, like the bumps and scrapes that happen during everyday activities, happen all the time in young children's lives. And we know that how parents respond helps to shape how young children learn about and experience pain.

In this study, we asked almost 300 parents about the different ways they might react when their children had an everyday pain (e.g. give them a hug or kiss, distract them with a toy, take them out of the play setting, etc.). Then, using this information, we used statistical techniques to develop a 10-item self-report measure!

Want to learn more? Check out our published paper in PAIN Reports (it's open access and freely available to everyone): https://journals.lww.com/painrpts/fulltext/2024/06000/preliminary_development_of_a_measure_of_parental.3.aspx
