Nadia Ivanova, co-founder of Sparrow BioAcoustics, has won the Innovation category at the Women Empowerment Awards .

The ceremony recognized women's achievements in business, entrepreneurship, and leadership. The evening began with a pre-party: photo zones, networking, and hands-on activities, including manicures, mini-paintings, and filming a short reel. Guests then moved to the main hall for dinner and the awards, which covered categories such as Mentorship, Innovation, and Global Impact.

Nadia was one of five finalists in Innovation. Before the winner was announced, the organizers screened a short film about our path, the company, and the work she and the team have built. After the announcement, a video message from Nadia, recorded in Serbia, was shown, in which she thanked the organizers for the award.

The award recognizes Nadia as a woman founder and innovator, her leadership in building the company, and Sparrow's contribution to innovation in cardiac healthcare technology.

and the : is there a connection worth knowing about?

A new systematic review and meta-analysis published in Spine Deformity (2026) analyzed data from 9,554 patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent echocardiographic evaluation. Cardiovascular abnormalities were identified in 7.5% of cases, with valvular abnormalities being the most frequently reported findings.

Does this mean that scoliosis causes heart disease? No. But the findings highlight why it is important to assess patients comprehensively, rather than viewing them solely through the lens of spinal deformity.

Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week — a reminder of the value of the first clinical signal.

For clinicians, it often starts with a deep heart sound characterization.

This week, September 14-20, brought attention to that first step and encouraged Canadians everywhere to have their heart sounds checked.

A murmur can be the point at which a routine encounter leads to further assessment, echocardiography, or referral.

This global awareness initiative is led by the Global Heart Hub's Heart Valve Disease Patient Network, with Heart Valve Voice leading the initiative nationally in Canada.

Ebstein’s anomaly is a rare congenital heart defect in which the is abnormally formed and displaced downward (toward the apex) into the right ventricle.

⛳What happens:
Part of the right ventricle becomes functionally incorporated into the right atrium, creating an atrialized portion of the right ventricle.
The tricuspid valve becomes malformed and may not close properly, resulting in tricuspid regurgitation. Over time, this can contribute to right-sided heart enlargement and, in more severe cases, right-sided heart failure.

Symptoms include:
▪Shortness of breath and fatigue
▪Chest discomfort or pain
▪Sensations of irregular or forceful heartbeats (arrhythmias are common)
▪Bluish discoloration of the skin (cyanosis)

+In severe cases, symptoms may appear within the first days of life.
Treatment for Ebstein’s anomaly depends on the severity of the condition and may range from regular monitoring and medical therapy to surgical correction of the defect.
