First Step to Health Empowerment: Mindset
In many ways our medical system and reliance on experts has created a culture of dependence when it comes to health. Most people spend most of their time thinking, processing information, caught up in their heads and somewhat detached from their bodies. In his wonderful book, Mindsight, Dr. Daniel Siegel defines mind as the flow of energy and information between the brain, body, and relationships. Our minds extend beyond the confines of our skulls, reaching even into our interactions with others and the environment. Mindset, then, is not some steely resolve or analytical process. It is an all-encompassing awareness, grounded in the present moment. It is an openness to accept things as they are because it is only from that place that shift happens.
In a couple of weeks, my colleague, Tyler Dillman, and I will be leading a workshop on the 4 Steps to #healthempowerment. As health care professionals, our expertise is helping others interpret the language their bodies are speaking. We teach our clients to understand what is being communicated by their symptoms and show them how to respond to move toward greater well being. Come and learn with us!

What does pain have to do with authenticity?
It's not that hard to see a connection between honest expression and relief of emotional pain. The opportunity to share openly with a friend, counselor, or supportive community, eases the burden of loneliness and breaks down the barriers between people. There is power in being heard, accepted and understood.
What's often harder for people to see is the connection between expression and physical pain. And, before going further, it should be noted that even the distinction between emotional and physical pain is somewhat false. ALL pain is a subjective experience with both physical and emotional components. Many people, however, experience pain as though it indicates something wrong with their body and they begin to guard and avoid certain movements. While this is sometimes appropriate, more often pain is an indication that movement is required to relieve tension on part of your system. This becomes more challenging when you don't know what movements are helpful. This is where authenticity comes in. Learning to let your body move in a way that expresses its natural instincts and intuitions leads to greater comfort, adaptability, and freedom. This requires listening to your body and ignoring the rules of how we've all been told to hold, move, and use our bodies. Admonishment to "sit still" and "sit up straight" had more to do with controlling behavior than with health and vitality.
So, tune in. Squirm around. Stretch out your body and then find a nice sunbeam to relax in. Discover that more animal nature within that already knows what it needs. Give yourself the time and space to explore what your pain is really asking for. You have our permission.
