Hi!!
👋🏻
It’s been a while since I introduced myself on here!

I’m Christine and I am the face behind @hamiltonpostpartum
I’m a registered midwife and have been working in Hamilton at @communitymidwivesofhamilton for 10 years (!)
I have three kiddo’s ages 2, 5, and 7 and we are excited to be welcoming baby #4 into our family this fall🙈

This group was created as a free, accessible space for people struggling with their mental health in pregnancy and postpartum — some people who come to group have a history or diagnosis of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns, and other people are struggling with their adjustment to pregnancy and parenthood and are looking to connect with some other people who are walking the same road. Whatever your situation, you are welcome to join.

Our groups are FREE and open, which means you are welcome to drop-in when it works for you and your baby (ie - you don’t have to commit to coming every week, we know how unpredictable life with a new baby can be!)

I also have lots of resources available on our website that people in our group have found helpful in the past that you may find helpful in your journey.

If you have any questions or are interested in joining our group, you can send me a DM on here, send me an email at [email protected] or fill out the contact page on the website!

What Is Perinatal Mental Health?

I’ve been wanting to launch the blog portion of our website for a while now, and today the stars aligned and I was able to publish our first little post!
It’s a basic intro to perinatal mental health with some links to helpful resources and information. I’m hoping to develop some more specific articles that are helpful for this audience, so if there are any topics that you’d love to see, pop a comment below!!

(Also...swipe if you want to see my actual zoom/work setup — computer on a mini air-hockey table with Paw Patrol vehicles in the background!)

Affirmations.
Have you used affirmations before?
Some people find affirmations to be very helpful to help shift negative self-talk, deal with feelings of doubt and overwhelm, and remind yourself to breathe when you feel the anxiety rising in your body - to name a few.

Write them on a sticky note and put it somewhere you will see it every day - on a bathroom mirror, beside your bed, or take a picture and set it as your phone wallpaper. You can even record an audio clip of you speaking encouraging words to yourself so you can listen to these phrases whenever you are feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.

Here are a few of my favourites...are there any other ones you would add?

These are all available to download for free from hamiltonpostpartum.ca under the “Downloads” tab (link in bio).

If you’re looking for information and strategies to support your mental health in pregnancy and postpartum we have 2 free printable pamphlets available on our website in the Downloads section. One focusing on Postpartum and one on Prenatal mental health strategies and resources.

I have to give some major credit to the fantastic @macmidwifery students who have completed a community placement with the Crown Point Midwives over the past several months. They have helped create these resources and pull our website together so that they’re available for the community!

Call it positive self-talk, an affirmation, or a mantra, but whatever it is, wearing this T-shirt is a reminder that even though this parenting thing is hard, that I’m doing an OK job. Especially on days when I’m not feeling up to the challenges my kiddos throw at me, getting through a day can certainly feel like a magic trick
🪄 💫
Some people find having affirmations that they say throughout the day can help foster a more positive mindset. Set it as the background on your phone...put a post-it on the bathroom mirror...wear it on a t-shirt

You can do this.
You are everything your baby needs.
Rest is productive.
One day at a time.
Today is just today.
Focus on the positive.
What other affirmations help your frame-of-mind during a challenging day?

What’s around the corner for 2021?
If you found the holiday season stressful, you’re not alone. Navigating the dos and don’ts of outdoor visits, struggling with not being able to share your baby’s firsts with those you care about, managing everyone’s various expectations and comfort levels surrounding the pandemic...
...so what are you leaving behind? The guilt of trying to please everyone? The anxiety of what-if’s? The overwhelm of trying to figure it all out on your own?

So let’s move on...what are you leaving behind and what are you embracing in the coming days...weeks...months...?

It’s been a while since I did an FAQ post so here we go!

This group is organized and facilitated by me, Christine Sandor. I have been a registered midwife at @communitymidwivesofhamilton since 2010.

In 2018 I started developing the plans for this group as part of the expanded scope midwifery care that is offered through the Crown Point Family Health Centre. We wanted to offer a drop-in group for people struggling with postpartum mental health that was free and accessible for clients.

This group started meeting on Tuesday mornings in October 2019 in the community space at Kenilworth Library and in March we moved the group online.

Through the challenges of the pandemic, we have been able to provide a space for people struggling with mental health in their postpartum journey to connect with each other to discuss challenges, strategies, and to feel a bit less isolated.

Our group continues to grow and in October we launched a Prenatal Peer Support Group for people struggling with mental health in pregnancy. This group now meets once a month.

If you or someone you know would be interested in joining our group, email me at [email protected] for more info!

Our Postpartum Peer Support group is FREE and open to anyone in the Hamilton area. This group is geared towards people in the first year of having a baby who are struggling with mood - anxiety, depression, anger, overwhelm, guilt, fear, isolation — mental health looks very different for everyone.

We meet weekly on Tuesdays at 10:15am on Zoom.

While this group doesn’t replace treatment for mental health concerns through a medical or mental health professional, peer support can be an effective supplementary treatment to one-on-one counselling, group therapy, or medical treatment of mental health concerns.

For more information about our group, check out the previous FAQ posts in our feed. If you have more questions or to join the group, email [email protected] or send me a DM with your email address

...getting up every hour through the night
...keeping up with home tasks
...planning what everyone is going to eat...every day...forever
...balancing parenting and work responsibilities
...never having time alone
...pretending you’re ok when you know you’re not

Whatever your “this” is, let’s figure out a way to work through it. Connecting with people who accept and can relate to how you are feeling can help acknowledge and accept the feeling you have and may be helpful in coming up with with strategies to move forward

Our postpartum group meets weekly on zoom — email or DM for details and more info.

When you have a new baby, making a commitment to attend something at a specific time can be daunting, especially if you are struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety.

Some people come out group almost every week, and other people come whenever it works. We get that each day is different and baby life is totally unpredictable.

Regardless of your schedule, you are welcome to pop in for as long (or as short) as you can to connect with other people who are looking for support.

And as always, we never mind if you are feeding yourself (or your baby) or need to bounce your baby, put someone down for a nap, get a toddler a snack, or just bail because chaos has erupted!
We are here for the struggles!

There are no quick fixes for these postpartum struggles.

It takes time to physically and emotionally adjust to parenthood.
It takes time to discover a new daily rhythm.
It takes time to figure out how to love and care for older siblings.
It takes time to realize that needing time alone is ok.
And then more time to figure out how to ask for help and get that time.

Be patient and kind with yourself along this journey because you will get there.

Rest. Is. Productive.
Time to recharge.
Time to think.
Time to enjoy a cup of coffee.

But switching off is hard. Ignoring the to do list is hard. Taking time to rest feels like a waste of time when you are surrounded by chaos and suddenly find yourself in a quiet moment

Taking that time to ignore the list, ignore the mess and sit and breathe can be a big help in recharging. Because even though an entire weekend getaway would be amazing, 15 minutes of peace probably a bit more realistic and attainable in this season.

Feeding your baby.
It’s supposed to be easy, right?
Come naturally?
Be a peaceful, bonding experience?
But for so many people, feeding their baby is anything but easy, peaceful and natural.

If feeding your baby doesn’t look or feel like you expected, you are not alone. The pain, stress, disappointment, anxiety, and exhaustion associated with feeding your baby — whether it’s breast, bottle, combo etc — can be a significant trigger for postpartum depression and anxiety

If you’re struggling with feeding, you can seek support from your midwife, family doctor, lactation consultant, or other support networks to try to help you identify what is difficult with feeding, and figure out a sustainable feeding plan that works for your baby AND for your mental and physical health.

...for wanting time alone
...for needing to ask for help
...for feeling overwhelmed
...for not enjoying the moment
...for longing for the life-before-kids times
...for wishing you baby was older...more independent...didn’t need you all. the. time.
...for not feeling connected to your baby
...for not exclusively breastfeeding
...for crying
...for yelling
...for napping
...for...for...for...

Let’s also talk about how this journey you are on is exactly that; YOUR journey.
Not someone else’s.

Comparing your experience to someone else’s or to how things are “supposed” to be is always going to lead to disappointment and guilt.

If you feel like you’re not doing this whole parenting thing “right”, guess what, we all feel that way! A lot of the time! Don’t be afraid to ask for help, share your feelings, seek support. This is a hard job we all need a break...and a support crew!

Sorry I’ve missed a couple of weeks! Busy days, and I’m away at my in-laws’ place next week, but I’ll try to connect while there 😘 Hope you’re all doing alright!
Sorry I couldn't really participate today between no camera drive and screaming kids. Much of what was discussed that I did hear I could have repeated myself ❤ anyway, I wanted to share this because I've been listening to a lot of CBC for multiple reasons I thought this might be of some comfort as it was for me, give it a listen!
Hey! Not sure if everyone already knows about this app, but it looks like a good resource. I just downloaded it this morning.
