The MHM program is offered primarily online, with two short on-site residency periods (three days each on-site at McMaster University in term 1 and term 6 of the program). These residency periods allow students to build rapport with other students in their cohort and to meet faculty members who may serve as an advisor for the student's scholarly paper. The program is offered on a part-time basis with students from a variety of health professional backgrounds taking five core courses together as part of a small cohort throughout the program. In addition, students will take one elective and have access to online courses (or on-site courses as an option for local students) from the DeGroote School of Business, the School of Rehabilitation Science, or from a wide range of courses offered through other faculties and departments at McMaster University (including Nursing, Social Work, Gerontology, and Epidemiology to name a few). The required courses include five core courses, an elective (half course, one credit, 3 units), and in the final year of study, choose: a) Scholarly Paper (full course, two credits, 6 units) or b) 2 from: Economic Evaluation in Healthcare, Strategic Writing for Health Professionals, Knowledge Translation in Healthcare Practice and Management, Quality and Safety in Healthcare (two credits, 6 units each). This schedule provides students with the flexibility to complete the entire program within 32 months. McMaster Health Forum

Read what the Health Forum has posted. Pretty interesting...

This month, we’ve added more than 50 reviews to Health Systems Evidence and identified five Hot Docs covering a range of topics that might be of interest to you. One of these reviews, which focused on pharmacist services provided outside of hospital settings, found that services delivered by pharmacists produced similar effects on patient health compared with services delivered by other healthcare professionals, but did not reduce hospital visits or admissions.

While pharmacist services may not result in improved care compared to that provided by other health professionals, they may offer people an alternative way to access non-emergency care.

Both the full-time and part-time students from cohort 2018 had a wonderful time at their first residency with the program this past weekend (October 12-14, 2018). Professor Randall provided some in class time for HM700/Health Policy, and the Administration provided some important sessions regarding expectations moving forward within the program, resources for assistance and of course our librarians shared a session that is always welcomed and invaluable!

01/09/2018

Dr. Sajid Ahmed (Class of 2015) was selected as one of the four International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) interns after a global competition in 2017. The ISQua Fellowship Internship program was launched in 2015. It offers the selected ISQua interns an opportunity to spend about two weeks with a leading organization in health care quality and safety, gain experience from the way in which the organization works and expand their network.
For the internship, Australian General Practice Limited (AGPAL) and Quality Innovation Performance (QIP) partnered to develop a customized program to meet intern needs and also provide exposure to the accreditation, quality improvement and patient safety environment in Australia. AGPAL and QIP are not-for-profit health promotion charities, delivering accreditation and support services to a wide range of organizations across Australia’s health, community and health services sectors.
During the internship in November 2017, I was able to visit AGPAL/QIP offices in Brisbane and learn about the following:
• Observe of the accreditation process from initial registration to certification – shadowing operation team members through the process
• Access proprietary software used to streamline the accreditation process
• Participate and observe an on-site survey
• Rotation with AGPAL Group staff members including: decisions, education and training, marketing, shared services and corporate strategy
• Visit patient safety and quality improvement unit of Queensland Health to learn about accreditation and patient engagement strategies
• Orient to Patient-centred Surveys and Patient Opinion at CFEP Australia
• Visit Australian Institute of Health Innovation to understand patient safety research
• Visit Macquarie University Hospital to understand Learn, Heal, Discover concept

On the social side, I was able to visit the Gold Coast, Koala Sanctuary and Stony Bridge in Brisbane and the Opera House, Harbor Bridge and Manly Island in Sydney. I had an opportunity to learn about wildlife in Australia and feed kangaroos! I learnt about Opals and ate fresh seafood.

I have learned that General Practice accreditation is a unique model globally and feel that building on this model is a way to improve community and population health on a broader basis. Also understanding the nuances of AGPAL and QIP have helped me in appreciating another accreditation system closely and sustained my ongoing development as a surveyor, quality and safety professional.

Overall, the visit was very informative and an awesome learning experience that helped to understand innovative strategies adopted in accreditation, quality improvement and patient safety in Australia.
Thank you to AGPAL, QIP and Aspetar for their support to pursue this wonderful opportunity.
