Hearing Loss is invisible and easy to ignore for the people! According to NIH,the below is the Quick Statistics About Hearing:About 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears.
More than 90 percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents.
Approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing.
Among adults aged 20-69, the overall annual prevalence of hearing loss dropped slightly from 16 percent (28.0 million) in the 1999-2004 period to 14 percent (27.7 million) in the 2011–2012 period.
Age is the strongest predictor of hearing loss.among adults aged 20-69, with the greatest amount of hearing loss in the 60 to 69 age group. Want to know your hearing? Call us 289-755-0295 today for a free hearing test

研究名为“The Impact of Self-Reported Vision and Hearing Impairment on Health Expectancy(自我报告视力和听力障碍对健康预期的影响)”,发表于《美国老年医学学会杂志》中。

Hearing Loss + Dementia

Dementia is an umbrella term for a set of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. Symptoms include memory loss, and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These symptoms can be severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday tasks. Because dementia is progressive, the symptoms will gradually get worse as more brain cells get damaged and die. It is not, however, a specific disease. Many diseases can cause dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body disease, frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s, as well as head trauma. These conditions all have similar and overlapping symptoms.

The less you use your brain, the more likely you are to develop dementia. When the hearing part of your brain grows inactive, it results in tissue loss and changes in brain structure. Studies show that the brains of those with hearing loss, atrophy (shrink) faster than those with normal hearing.

Untreated hearing loss can lead to living in isolation because people with untreated hearing loss are more likely to experience loneliness, worry, depression, anxiety, and paranoia – making them less likely/willing to participate in organized and casual social activities. When someone isolates themselves, their risk for cognitive disorders increases.

Your brain has to work harder to process sound if you don’t hear well, taking away resources/focus from other important activities, such as remembering, thinking, and acting. This further enables dementia and other cognitive disorders to develop.

If you already have a cognitive disorder, hearing loss can aggravate symptoms. Overall, hearing impairment makes it hard to listen, reply, and respond to someone speaking, which can increase feelings of confusion, isolation, and paranoia. Hearing aids improve your hearing, but they also help preserve independence, mental abilities, emotional and physical health, and work/home/social lives. A full life keeps your brain active, therefore reducing your risk for a cognitive disorder. A study completed by the American Journal of Epidemiology found that hearing aids helped slow the rate of memory decline and improved Alzheimer’s patients’ quality of life.

Audiometry (diagnostic hearing tests)

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type, and configuration of a person’s hearing loss. PTA is a subjective, behavioural measurement of a hearing threshold, as it relies on patient responses to pure tone stimuli. PTA only measures audibility thresholds (what is the softest sound you can hear?), rather than other aspects of hearing, like sound localization and speech recognition. However, the results also allow us to see if there is any asymmetry in your hearing loss. PTA provides ear specific thresholds, and uses frequency specific pure tones to give place specific responses in order to identify the configuration. Because PTA uses air and bone conduction audiometry, the type of hearing loss can be identified via the air-bone gap.

Audiogram showing hearing loss in testee.
An audiogram showing hearing loss.
Speech Audiometry
Speech audiometry is done to check how loud speech must be for someone to hear it, as well as how clearly you can actually hear and distinguish different words when spoken. It may be conducted using a recording, or the tester may read the words aloud to the person completing the test. First, a test is to determine your speech reception threshold (SRT), which is the lowest volume at which you can hear and determine speech. The audiologist will ask you to repeat the list of words to do so. Then, a second test measures your level of speech discrimination, or word recognition ability. Again, you’ll be asked to repeat a list of words, but this time at a comfortable listening level.

Above all, these tests are conducted to measure your level of hearing, and which hearing aid would be most appropriate for you, or if you’d be better off using another hearing instrument. For example, in the case your level of speech discrimination is very poor, you may be better suited to get a cochlear implant, as even upping the volume of a very powerful hearing aid might not be enough to help you understand what’s being said.

Here at Life Hearing Solutions, we offer free pure tone and speech recognition hearing tests. Visit http://www.lifehearingsolutions.com/en/hearing-solutions/, or just call 289-755-0295 today to book an appointment!
