๐ง What FORM of magnesium do you take?
I can't tell you how many times I hear:
โI take magnesium!โ
And when I ask, โWhat form?โ
๐ณ Blink.
We'll get to WHY the form matters later this week, because magnesium glycinate, citrate, oxide, malate, threonate, etc. aren't necessarily interchangeable.
But first โ why are we so interested in magnesium in the first place?
โก Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme systems in your body!!!!
That means your body uses magnesium behind the scenes ALL DAY LONG.
It helps support:
๐ช Normal muscle function
Magnesium plays a role in normal muscle contraction and relaxation. That's one reason we think about magnesium when someone mentions muscle cramping, twitching or tight muscles.
๐ง Your nervous system
Magnesium is involved in normal nerve signalling and nervous-system functionโwhich is one reason it's so often associated with relaxation.
๐ด Sleep & relaxation
Magnesium is involved in pathways that help regulate nervous-system activity. It's not a sleeping pillโbut adequate magnesium is important for normal neurological function.
โก Making ENERGY
Here's one people don't always realize: magnesium is required for processes involved in producing and using ATPโour cells' main energy currency.
โค๏ธ Normal heart function
Your heart is a muscle too! Magnesium is involved in normal heart rhythm, muscle contraction and blood-pressure regulation.
๐ฉธ Blood sugar regulation
Magnesium participates in glucose metabolism and insulin signalling.
๐ฆด Your bones
About 50โ60% of the magnesium in your body is stored in your bones. Magnesium works alongside nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D in maintaining normal bone health.
And here's an interesting statistic:
๐ About 48% of Americans consume less magnesium from food and beverages than their Estimated Average Requirement.
That doesn't mean 48% of people are magnesium deficientโbut it does tell us that low magnesium intake is pretty common.
๐ฅฌ Magnesium is naturally found in foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.
So YES, magnesium is important.
But here's where it gets interesting...
If you're supplementing with magnesium, I want you to go grab your bottle and turn it around.
Look for:
Magnesium (as ____________)
Glycinate?
Citrate?
Oxide?
Malate?
Something else?
๐ Tell me what yours says.
Because this week we're talking about why that little word after โmagnesiumโ mattersโand which forms I tend to reach for and why.
