Happy Birthday to Olaus Jeldness -- the father of Rossland ski culture! ⛷️❄️

Born in Norway, Jeldness grew up in an area where skiing was part of daily life. At just sixteen, he left home to work as a miner in America, eventually arriving in Rossland in 1894 to join the crew at the Josie Mine. His mining expertise soon led to major discoveries, including the Velvet Mine and several claims on the west side of Sophie Mountain. Selling these properties during the height of the boom earned him a considerable fortune.

However, Jeldness is remembered most for the energy he brought to local skiing! While Scandinavian miners had already introduced ski running, jumping, cross-country travel, and skijoring to the area, Jeldness quickly became the sport’s most visible champion. He helped form the Norwegian Ski Club, organized community races, and encouraged skiing as both recreation and competition.

In 1896, he won Rossland’s first downhill race from the summit of Red Mountain right down to the present museum site! He went on to dominate early national championships, winning downhill and jumping titles for three consecutive years. Although Olaus Jeldness passed away on April 25, 1935, his winter sports legacy continues to define Rossland today.

One of our favourite parts of sauna is the contrast between hot and cold.
