What COVID test do you need to go to the states? If you find it confusing, you aren’t alone!! Even our own MP Mark Gerretsen seems to think you need PCR! You don’t.

-To go TO THE States by plane you need an antigen test within 3 CALENDAR DAYS. Hours don’t matter. Cost is about $40. Lots of places do it, as do I.

-To COME BACK to Canada, you need a MOLECULAR test within 72 hours of departure. Cost is about $200, although I’ve had patients say they found free ones. CVS seems to have lots of (not free) locations

-If you will be in the states for a short time, you can use the same PCR test to get in AND back, as long as the test is taken within 72 hours of return. Considering that results take at least 24 hours to come back (which would have to happen before you go to the US) that would be a short trip!

-Currently those able to cross the border by land require NO test or vaccine. Once the border opens you will have to show vaccine but what test is required hasn’t been published yet.

I wish there was better news. For now, if you are on multiple pharmacy waitlists you are doing all you can to get your vaccine. There is no booking (yet) for those with underlying conditions, but it's coming. For now, we are helping qualified patients to book with the health unit if they are struggling to use the online system. If you have any questions about the vaccine or booking, please send us a message! It's a free service. Stay safe, everyone.

Here is a great article by Meghan Balogh in the Kingston Whig-Standard on the current status of COVID vaccinations in pharmacies. Jen's leadership has led to a successful start to pharmacy vaccination in KFLA. YGKVAX.COM is the site I created to keep the public informed about vaccine availability and booking without tying up phone lines that pharmacies need to operate. http://ow.ly/t2AF50E8yC3

If you are 60-64 at any point in 2021, there is still plenty of vaccine here for you in Kingston at many local pharmacies with minimal wait time.

One of the most common questions I seem to get right now: "Is the AstraZenica Vaccine safe?" To quote directly from the attached article, "Millions of people have received the shots without safety problems, and the European Medicines Agency found no evidence of any causal link with blood clots or abnormal bleeding."

Introducing Travel Health Experts

Suzanne Garrett is a pharmacist and educator with a particular interest in travel health. In 2012, Suzanne began studying travel medicine with the goal of opening a travel clinic at her pharmacy on the campus of Queen’s University. Suzanne took courses including the Westchester Travel Medicine Course in New York and the ISTM Exam Review Course in Toronto. In 2014 Suzanne passed the International Society of Travel Medicine Certificate of Knowledge exam. She opened the travel clinic at Queen’s University shortly after that, and immediately began experimenting with novel ways of delivering service such as online consults and video tutorials. In 2015 when the KFLA health unit stopped offering travel vaccinations, she was incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Jay Keystone and several very experienced public health nurses join the clinic at Queen’s. Those individuals became mentors and teachers for almost 5 years, until the passing of Dr. Keystone in 2019.

Suzanne now owns and operates Travel Health Experts, an independent travel health consultation service. She is an active member of the International Society of Travel Medicine and the American Travel Health Nurses Association. Suzanne stays up to date with travel health news by attending the biannual congress of ISTM, reading travel medicine journals and completing continuing education programs whenever she can. She will be attending the McGill Summer Institute for Global Health in July 2020.

Before becoming a pharmacist, Suzanne studied at Queen’s University majoring in English Language and Literature with a medial in Health Studies. She then completed a Bachelor of Education Degree, also at Queen’s University, with a focus on International and Development Education. Her pharmacy degree was completed at the University of Toronto in 2005. Suzanne is a member of the Ontario Pharmacists Association where she has served on the Professional Practice Committee. She also volunteers on the standard setting group for examinations at the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

Outside of work, Suzanne enjoys spending time with her four children. She is also a competitive runner and occasionally acts in amateur theatre productions.
