Great first havest of plums from our plum tree. Not bad considering we have been sharing with the birds and chipmunks :) if you have space in your backyard (or even front) I recommend planting a plum tree. After about three years you will start getting an abundance of fruit. I think we paid around $30 for this tree a few years ago. I expect will we easily betting a return on that investment!

Here are some interesting facts about the dandelion flower:

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. ☀️ 🌙 ⭐️. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.

The dandelion flower opens to greet the morning and closes in the evening to go to sleep. 😴

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Up until the 1800s people would pull grass out of their lawns to make room for dandelions and other useful “w**ds” like chickw**d, malva, and chamomile.

The name dandelion is taken from the French word “dent de lion” meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves. 🦁

Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant.

Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds are often carried as many as 5 miles from their origin!

Animals such as birds, insects and butterflies consume nectar or seed of dandelion.🐦 🐛 🐜 🦋 🐝.

Dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seed.

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Dandelion can be used in the production of wine and root beer. Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee. 🍷 🍺

Dandelions have sunk their roots deep into history. They were well known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years.

Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as diuretic.

If you mow dandelions, they’ll grow shorter stalks to spite you.

Dandelions are, quite possibly, the most successful plants that exist, masters of survival worldwide. 💪

A not so fun fact: Every year countries spend millions on lawn pesticides to have uniform lawns of non-native grasses, and we use 30% of the country’s water supply to keep them green.

Study: Kids Who Grow Up Surrounded By Nature Become Happier Adults

Maybe this is why my parents kept me out of the house when I was growing up!

The more “green space” kids grow up surrounded by, the fewer psychiatric problems they have later in life, a new 30-year-study finds. Growing up in a home surrounded by trees and vegetation, rather than city buildings, lowers children’s risk of psychiatric disorders in adolescence and adulthoo...

Let the dandelions "bee"!

Dandelions are pollinators’ best friends: lay off the w**d killer and the lawnmower, ecologist urges Aside from being extremely useful to humans, dandelions and other common lawn “w**ds” are invaluable to bees and other pollinators. You can help globally struggling pollinators tremendously sim...

This teenager is on a mission to put 100 seed libraries across all 50 states!
Meet Alicia Serratos a 14 year old environmental activist and Girl Scout on a mission to inspire seed-saving, to increase food security and help others connect to nature. Right now her big goal is to send out 100 seed library boxes to be set up in all 50 U.S. states! She is only 12 states away from reaching her goal and we want to help her do that!

Her 3 Sisters Seed Box is like a free seed library starter pack! Each box includes organic seeds, an informational binder with instructions on how to get started, envelopes for seed check-out and all the basics to have a seed library launched within a day!

After setting up the library people can check out seeds like you would books, giving communities access to a variety of different seeds that they can plant and grow their own food! Some of the plants are harvested for food and others go to seed. Those seeds can then be returned to the seed library for others to plant and grow!

If you or someone you know lives in one of these 12 states—Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee or Wyoming—please send an email to [email protected] to request a seed box for you or a friend!

And, be sure to follow her and support her work: 3 Sisters Seed Box

STUDY: Flowers Can Hear Bees Buzzing and Respond By Making Their Nectar Sweeter

Not only do plants have their own song but they can listen as well!

Flowers are the “ears” of plants, scientists discover! And these ears are particularly tuned in to the sounds of bees! Plants can hear! And their ears are far prettier than animal ears! Flowers are more than just pretty decorations for catching the eyes of hungry pollinators. It turns out they [...

Nearly 40% of Russia's Food Still Comes From Small, Family Gardens

Almost half of Russia’s food is grown in backyard gardens! While most of the world is completely dependent on industrial agriculture, the Russian people feed themselves. As recently as 2011, a full 40% of the food produced in Russia came from small, household gardens called dachas. That number is ...
