Q&A: Why does getting busy help with anxiety?

A: Anxiety often grows in uncertainty and anticipation. Taking small, manageable steps helps interrupt overthinking, restores a sense of control, and signals to the nervous system that we have options.

Action doesn’t always remove fear, but it reminds us that fear doesn’t have to lead.

Being busy can silence anxiety, but slowing down helps us understand what it’s ‘trying to communicate.’

Sunday Self Reflection: The Reverence Born From Grief

Sometimes, our deepest reverence for life is birthed from our deepest grief. Not because suffering makes us wiser, but because grief can strip away the illusions we once trusted, inviting us to uncover what has been living beneath our survival. Yet, somewhere along the way, we begin trusting our thoughts as though they are absolute truths, forgetting that some were shaped in moments of abandonment, fear, loss, and unmet emotional needs.

“Thoughts can be loud without being true”. The mind may repeat what wounded us long after the danger has passed, while the body continues responding to a story that no longer reflects who we are becoming. This is the deeper work of uncovering: learning to discern between what happened to us, what we came to believe about ourselves, and what is actually true. Perhaps reverence begins when we stop treating every painful thought as wisdom and start listening to ourselves with compassion instead of judgment.

‘Not everything your grief taught you was meant to become your identity.’ 💭

READ ⬇️: What Did I Need That I’m Still Finding Now?

We don’t always outgrow our unmet emotional needs. Sometimes we build entire personalities, relationships, and survival patterns around them.

Food for Thought 💭: And what we call adult behaviour may be a younger part of us still searching for safety, reassurance, belonging, and love.

We learned what children need (see post) when they cry, become angry, withdraw, or seek attention. But what happens when those needs go unmet and the child becomes an adult?

Sometimes our people-pleasing is a longing for acceptance. Our anger is a need to be heard. Our perfectionism is a fear of disappointing. Our hyper-independence is a child who learned that needing someone wasn’t safe.

Healing begins when we become curious about the child beneath the adult we’ve learned to be.

Presence.

________

✔️ Self-Permission Nuggets posts are small, encouraging reposted messages designed to help people in a state of learned helplessness — that is, people who feel stuck, powerless, or unable to act on their own behalf because past experiences have conditioned them to believe they have no control.

These posts offer reminders and gentle affirmations that:

✅ It is safe to make choices for yourself.
✅ You have the right to say yes or no.
✅ Your body and your life belong to you.
✅ Small decisions are valid steps toward reclaiming your agency.

For folks who have lived in environments where choices were taken away — through abuse, oppression, or chronic disempowerment — Self-Permission Nuggets serve as bite-sized permission slips to rebuild trust in their own inner wisdom.

They’re meant to break through the freeze or stuckness of learned helplessness by:

🫶🏾 planting seeds of possibility
🫶🏾 validating even the smallest acts of self-care or self-advocacy
🫶🏾 normalizing the right to choose, act, and decide for oneself

Advice from a Neuroscientist 🧐💭

Burnout is not always the result of doing too much; “sometimes, it is the result of carrying too much of what we emotionally need but have learned to go without” — Nicole Brown Faulknor.

When our needs for safety, belonging, rest, recognition, connection, and support remain unmet, we may compensate by overworking, overgiving, people-pleasing, or constantly proving our worth.

Over time, these survival patterns can keep our nervous systems under prolonged stress, leaving our bodies with fewer opportunities to recover. Sometimes burnout is the body expressing the emotional needs we have spent years learning to silence.

More Q & A’s: What is Meta-Cognition? Why is this different than feeling intuitive? Am I just intuitive?

A: Reposted from Brian Yang - Transformational Mentor

the watcher was never the problem.
it kept you safe in a house where one slammed door could flip the whole night.
but it’s been on duty so long you think it’s you.
it’s not.
it’s a part.
an eight year old

still working a shift nobody ended.

and you can’t think a part off duty...

you gotta show it the danger is over.

not explain it. _show_ it.
that happens in the body.
not in the next book.
so be honest.

what’s the line you say in your head right before you do it anyway?

Brian

Sample Q: Why do some people say you may be addicted to your stress or addicted to your past feelings?

I’ll be working on putting the finishing touches on a new anonymous question series, where your questions and lived experiences become opportunities for education, reflection, and conversations that challenge the ways we’ve come to understand trauma, healing, and care.

A: Thoughts, they say, are body sensations. They release familiar cortisol hormones and stress that is familiar to the body. Emotions, feelings and thought can alter our physiology, so to speak.

Your questions matter. Your experiences matter. And your voices will help shape the conversations we need to have.💙🙏🏾!
