October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Among women in Canada, breast cancer is the most common cancer (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers) and the second leading cause of death from cancer. It’s estimated that in 2022:

➡️ 28,600 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This represents 25% of all new cancer cases in women in 2022.
➡️ 5,500 Canadian women will die from breast cancer. This represents 14% of all cancer deaths in women in 2022.

Breast cancer touches the lives of so many families every day. That’s why we’re committed to championing world-leading outcomes in breast cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and support – this month and every month.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the many contributions Black Canadians have made to the advancements of health care.

Toronto-born Bernice Redmon aspired to be a nurse but was denied admission into Canadian nursing programs.

In 1945, she received her nursing diploma in the U.S. and returned to Canada to work, making her the first Black nurse to practice in public health.

Redmon is one of the many incredible Black Canadians we honour today and every day.

City Council understands our community needs more family physicians 🩺

As part of our 2022 Action Plan, City Council has made this a priority and we're working hard to find solutions in partnership with organizations including Alberta Health Services, Chinook Primary Care Network and existing local physicians.

At the recent Cultural and Social Standing Policy Committee, it was recommended that Council allocate $15K towards family physician marketing and recruitment campaign in partnership with the Chinook Primary Care Network, AHS and Economic Development Lethbridge and other interested partners.

Three international physician graduates have signed letters of offer and seven others are pending right now. We hope to see more physicians call Lethbridge home soon and are working to make this a reality.

If you'd like to keep updated on how City Council is progressing with our 2022 Action Plan, please sign up for our quarterly report newsletter at www.lethbridge.ca/2022ActionPlan.
