Many people use melatonin supplements as a sleep aid. But if you’ve ever felt as if they aren’t helping, you’re not alone.
Dr. Gabriella Gobbi, at McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, is doing research on how the brain responds to melatonin.
At the center of this complex system are two receptors. Think of them as “locks” that melatonin, the “key,” binds to in order to affect different levels of sleep. Melatonin can activate both receptors, sometimes cancelling out the intended effects.
Dr. Gobbi is working on targeted therapies on single receptors to open doors for more effective sleep therapy and pain regulation.
