New considerations for low back pain management…

The take away: rest is not always best!

Exercise and a multidisciplinary approach (ie Athletic Therapy, massage, acupuncture, Physio or Chiro) while addressing any underlying psychological conditions are recommended before strong meds and surgery.

We are one body with many parts, it’s time to treat recovery with a wholistic approach!

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. Here is a new one page patient handout from JAMA outlining current research and treatment options for people with back pain.

Motivation is not something that comes naturally.

For me, getting up early and working out is not something I get excited about. Anyone who knows me knows that I like to sleep in any chance I can. I am a natural born nighthawk but since I’ve taken the steps to prioritize my health I have also learned that I need to be my own motivation and stay committed by working out first thing. And that means getting a good nights sleep and sticking with my morning routine.

The team of women I workout with help keep me accountable but in the end I need to find my reason to keep going.

What do you do to keep going when your motivation is running low?

Take the time today to breathe deep. Your back, neck, shoulders, digestion, adrenal glands...everything will thank you.

How to:

🌬Lie on your back on a flat surface (or in bed) with your knees bent. You can use a pillow under your head and your knees for support if that's more comfortable.
Place one hand on your upper chest and the other on your belly, just below your rib cage.

🌬Breathe in slowly through your nose, letting the air in deeply, towards your lower belly. The hand on your chest should remain still, while the one on your belly should rise.

🌬Tighten your abdominal muscles and let them fall inward as you exhale through pursed lips. The hand on your belly should move down to its original position.

Don’t just think about a protein shake after your workout for optimizing your recovery.

Dark leafy greens, rich coloured berries and cherries are great sources of polyphenols which may help you in your recovery. 🥬🍒🫐🍓🥦

This is where I start.

This is what I need to help me move better, give me a boost and jumpstart my day.

Health is more than just workouts. It’s my nutrition, support systems, goal setting/reviewing and tracking, and it’s my self care time.

This is where my day might start but it’s not where it ends.

Where are you starting and do you end where you want?

We are a society of instant gratification. We want our coffee, pay, meals and deliveries immediately. It’s often the same with our health.

We start a program, start a challenge or join a gym and expect to lose 10 lbs in 2 days and when we don’t see immediate results we quit. Sometimes results happen quickly and then we plateau and give up.

This plant hit a plateau and went dormant for months. I thought I killed it, but kept its sad wilted leaves and continued to love and care for it. Much to my surprise it has come to life and has new flowers blooming!

This is a reminder to myself and everyone else, when things seem to be dormant or plateaued... this is when you need to love yourself more and be patient. You never know when you will start to bloom again.
