🏃‍♂️The UV Run Club🏃‍♂️...let's talk running and breathing!

To the new and even experienced runner, the act of running can be a very physically demanding venture that pushes both our muscles and our heart to work extremely hard to fuel this activity. Often times, it can make us feel out of breath, our heart racing uncontrollably, the dreaded development of the side stitch or cramping muscles. Ultimately forcing us to stop in our tracks and halting our progress. However, it’s possible to quickly fix this problem just by working on your breathing.

Here are a few breathing tips to help you get those running gains!

1️⃣ Belly Breathing - instead of shallow breathing (only chest expanding), think about take deep slow breaths that expand your belly. This will help you to inhale more oxygen efficiently, allowing your heart, lunges, and muscles to work optimally.

2️⃣ Form Check - keep that chest proud, shoulders down and back, core engaged and upper body relaxed. This will help to keep your airways open making it easier to breathe and allowing for greater oxygen efficiency.

3️⃣ Rhythmic Breathing - if you’ve never heard of this before. Don’t worry, neither did I until recently. But rhythmic breathing while running - just like when lifting weights - is absolutely crucial to our success as athletes. All this means is that every time you take you inhale take 3 strides and for every exhale you take 2 strides. That’s a 3:2 breath to stride ratio. By focusing on your breath to stride ratio you can really control your effort, stabilize your heart rate and prevent over exertion that can potentially lead to an injury or having to stop in the middle of the run.

Let's take a minute to talk about Steve!

Since his last scan, we've seen progress in all directions! Steve has gained an impressive 5.9lb of lean muscle, AND shown a significant drop in body fat percentage by almost 5%! This incredible pair of stats has led to an overall drop in bodyweight (despite all that extra muscle!) which is no easy feat.

Results don't come overnight: they are the product of consistency, day after day, week after week... and we love to see it!

A huge well done Steve; we're super proud of your progress and can't wait to see you continue your journey with us!

You don’t need to be fit enough to do CrossFit: CrossFit is HOW you get fit.

It might look hard, and you might see movements that you don’t feel ready for, but we are here to assure you that absolutely every class - yes, every movement, every skill, and every workout - is scalable to you. Not future, fitter you, but you RIGHT NOW.

At UV, all of classes are coached by a trained professional, who not only knows their stuff, but who really cares. Movement versions and variations are constantly adapted to suit our members, so no one is ever ‘not fit enough’ to take on one of our class workouts.

🏃‍♂️The UV Run Club🏃‍♂️...let's talk technique tips and cues!

Welcome back to a new UV Mini-feature, where we look at support and advice to help you get the most out of running! This week we're running you through (we couldn't resist!) four top tips and cues to improve your technique.

1️⃣Running Tall. Imagine a string attached to the top of your chest and the string being pulled upwards to the sky. This will elongate the torso which will help to open up your hips, allowing for a more powerful stride. In addition, it’ll help with ease of breathing.

2️⃣Stay relaxed. Relax your shoulders (set them down and back), relax your arms, hands and face. Running relaxed will help you to be more efficient, it will prevent fatigue and allow you to focus you on your breath and cadence.

3️⃣Hips under the shoulders and facing forward. By bringing your hips under your shoulders you will be in a better postural position allowing you to be more efficient with each step. It’ll also help to recruit more from your glutes and hamstrings therefore making each stride more powerful and allowing you to cover more distance in a shorter period of time.

4️⃣Driving through and up on every stride. As you stride, think about driving your knee up and through (powerfully) this will help to increase the force that your foot strikes the ground, increasing your stride length. Ultimately improving your run times.

“I came to CrossFit UV because I was desperately searching for an alternative to the boring daily grind at my local gym. I have been truly amazed by how motivating and exciting the team at CrossFit UV make every workout. I wish I had come here years ago. They have classes starting at 6AM which is ideal for my schedule.

I went back to my local gym to cancel my membership and the moment I entered I was shocked by how different it felt. At CrossFit UV I feel a kind of energy to push past your limits and strive for excellence. I found a vacuum at my old gym. I understand now why it was hard to get myself to go there.

At CrossFit UV I can’t wait to go. The people are supportive, and encouraging. If I find myself getting tired they help out with a kind word as to the other class participants.

🏃‍♂️The UV Run Club🏃‍♂️...let's talk pre-run Nutrition!

Welcome to a new UV Mini-feature, where we look at tips and advice to help you get the most out of running! This week we're talking pre-run nutrition: specifically how to fuel yourself in the 1 hour window leading up to your run.

💡If your run is less than 1 hour long, then choosing a healthy snack that is easy to digest and that will help fuel your performance is best. These snacks include but are not limited to: apples, bananas, dates, oranges or an energy bar.

❓When should you eat before a run?

💡You can eat a healthy snack about 30-60 minutes prior to your run. This will give your body enough time to digest the food and store the energy for the run.

💡Eating a heavy snack (high in cals/fats) just before a run can be detrimental to how you perform. There is nothing worse than eating food too close to a workout or a run and you spend more time burping and trying to keep your food down than on recovery between sets and kicking ass. So let’s keep the snacks light and the runs fast!

We have a pretty cool set of InBody scan results to share from the UV community today!

Introducing the wonderful Steph! Steph joined UV just two months ago, with a main goal of adding muscle and overall bodyweight. And would you look at those results.. she's absolutely nailed it! With a 3.5lb increase in lean muscle, we're seeing total bodyweight go up, and body fat go down. In just 2 months this is nothing short of awesome!

We can't wait to see you get stronger and stronger Steph - you are on the right track and already making such incredible progress. Way to go!
