Sticking to your sleep schedule in the summertime can be a difficult task. Between the hot weather, and the endless activities, getting a good sleep every night can be tough.

Now that summer is coming to an end, it's time for most of us to get our sleep schedule back on track.

Here are some tips that will help you fix your sleep schedule this September!

1. Set a regular bedtime and stick to it.

2. Improve your sleep environment by getting a supportive pillow, a great mattress or blackout curtains.

3. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine.

4. Skip naps during the day.

5. Exercise regularly

6. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and ni****ne.

7. Expose yourself to bright light during the day.

8. Consider taking supplements that promote good sleep.

9. Avoid alcohol.

10. Limit your exposure to blue light at night.

These are just some of the steps you can take at home to improve your sleep schedule. If your problems with sleep are having a negative impact on your day to day life, consult your doctor for further advice.

Statistics show more than a third of us hit the snooze button at least three times each morning in order to steal a few extra minutes of precious sleep, but the problem is that you’re not really resting, or sleeping well, between the alarms.

This is because the most restful parts of your sleep cycle have already happened by the time your first alarm rings. Trying to go back to sleep with the snooze button, only to be awoken again five minutes later, is confusing your body and brain.

Multiple alarm-wake episodes will repeatedly draw you out of the deeper, more productive stages of sleep. Your brain is actively healing and resetting during deep sleep stages and unnecessary disruption to those processes is not going to help your energy and mood in the long run.

Rather than pressing the snooze button every five minutes for half an hour, just set the alarm for 30 minutes later and enjoy a longer sleep without disruption!

In Canada, we are lucky to be able to enjoy a variety of different fruits and vegetables every season, and the springtime is no exception.

There are many benefits to eating produce that is in season all year long such as saving on food costs as well as having a better tasting product, but did you know that fresher foods have a higher nutritional value?

Produce that is purchased in season is more likely to be fresher, consumed closer to harvesting and higher in nutritional value, some anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C, folate and carotenes will rapidly decline when stored for periods of time.

Eating seasonally also reduces the demand for out of season produce which further supports more local produce and supports local farming in your area which means less transportation, less refrigeration, less hot houses, and less irradiation of produce.

How to: Lie on your back, lifting and extending your hips and sit bones a little to make sure that your back is nice and long.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms and your natural sleep cycle.

Most people’s bodies produce enough melatonin for sleep on their own. However, there are steps you can take to make the most of your natural melatonin production, or you can try a supplement on a short-term basis if you’re experiencing insomnia, want to overcome jet lag, or are a need to get to bed earlier and wake up earlier.

Melatonin dietary supplements can be used to treat sleep disorders, such as delayed sleep phase, and provide relief from insomnia and jet lag. It will also help you fall asleep more easily, sleep longer, and wake up less frequently during the night.

It is is a non-addictive supplement and does not produce the “hangover” effect of many sleep-aid drugs. It can also enhance CPAP therapy by stabilizing your sleep and wakefulness patterns by regulating the chemicals in your body that make you feel either drowsy or alert.

Remember, melatonin can't take the place of a doctor's care for serious sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or long-term insomnia. Please consult your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you have any health conditions.

Today marks the start of Sleep Awareness Week 2022, an annual event organized by the National Sleep Foundation to emphasize the connection between good sleep and better health.

Sleep is essential for your physical and mental wellbeing, but it’s not always easy to settle down and get good quality rest. Here are our favourite tips for getting relaxed at bedtime, and ensuring you get a good night's rest:

💤 Take a warm bath or shower
💤 Unwind with light yoga or meditation
💤 Turn off all electronics 30 minutes before bed
💤 Use a diffuser with calming essential oils such as lavender
💤 Avoid alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime

This Sunday morning at 2 am is when we officially switch to Daylight Saving Time. As we prepare to spring our clocks forward, it is important to ensure we are ready for losing that hour of sleep, otherwise it can leave us feeling groggy and irritable. It can also be dangerous.

Studies have found that both heart attacks and fatal car accidents increase after the spring shift to Daylight Saving Time.

Here are some tips to make this transition a little easier:

☀ Ease into it a few days early. Starting tonight, try sleeping and waking up 15 minutes earlier each day so that it’s not so difficult getting up a whole hour earlier than usual on Monday morning.

☀ Avoid coffee and alcohol too close to bedtime. Alcohol and caffeine can prohibit you from getting quality sleep, so it's best to avoid it before bed.

☀ Turn off your electronic screens 30 minutes before you go to sleep. Too much exposure to blue light late at night can disturb your wake and sleep cycle.

☀ Stick to a set sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on the weekends. This helps your body regulate its sleep cycle.

☀ Exposing yourself to bright light in the morning. This will help you adjust to the time change.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour at 2 am this Sunday!
