Is it a COLD or THE FLU???

10/29/2019

Facts About THE FLU

THE FLU IS MUCH WORSE THAN A BAD COLD.

Flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses.

Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone.

In general, flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms are more intense.

People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.

Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.

Sun safety tips

You can protect your family and still have fun under the sun.

•Cover up-
When the UV Index is 3 or higher, protect your skin as much as possible. Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat made from breathable fabric.

•Limit your time in the sun -
Keep out of the sun and heat between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The UV index in Canada can be 3 or higher during those times. When your shadow is shorter than you, the sun is very strong. Always take an umbrella to the beach.

•Use sunscreen-
Put sunscreen on when the UV index is 3 or higher. Use sunscreen labelled “broad spectrum” and “water resistant” with an SPF of at least 30.

•Drink plenty of cool liquids (especially water) before you feel thirsty. If sunny days are also hot and humid, stay cool and hydrated to avoid heat illness.

Stay Hydrated – How much water should you be drinking?

To keep your body hydrated, aim for a daily fluid intake of about 2 – 3 litres (9 – 12 cups) per day, based on your body size and activity level.

When you are more active, and the weather is hotter, you will need to increase your intake.

Water is one of the best fluid choices, but you can also drink other beverages such as milk, juice, broth/soups, coffee and tea.

Have a Sun-safe Summer

It’s natural to want to get out in the sun during warm summer days.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays – from the sun and other sources like tanning beds – are the #1 cause of skin cancer. Too much exposure can also cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature wrinkles. But shielding your skin with clothing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and staying in the shade can help lower your risk.
