January just flew by!
If February has surprised you and you haven't yet made the 2024 changes you were hoping for, don't despair!
This moment can be a new beginning!
Reset your goals and make a plan. Recruit the help you need and create a relationship that offers accountability: Meet a friend for a workout or see a practitioner who will check in with you a few times per month to ensure you're steadily reaching your health targets.
Instead of becoming discouraged, welcome yourself with compassion and enjoy the process. We are always just one decision away from change.
A 2018 study in Basic Clinical Neuroscience titled Stress and Perception of Emotional Stimuli: Long term Stress rewiring the Brain, demonstrated just that.
A non-stressed group and a chronically stressed group were put to the emotional stimuli test. The test demonstrated that the rewiring of the brain caused by chronic stress resulted in distorted perception of emotional stimulus. Translated: a changed perception of reality.
I have wondered in my random ponderings whether chronic stress is associated with the development of frayed neurosynapsis and neuro and cognitive degenerative diseases. This study definitely doesn't prove this association, but affirms that chronic stress rewires the brain. I'd say that there are only a few short steps between the two.
As January 2024 comes to a close, can we reflect on our intentions from the new year:
Have we been efforting ourselves into a new way of being without changing our old and often subtle, habitual patterns? Have we been trying to achieve self care when the self sabotage mechanism is still in place?
Behavioural changes are rarely lasting when they're supported by an old mindset. In order to change our mindset we have to become aware of the one holding us back. How do we become aware?
Stop, breathe ... and pay close attention.
Sweet, tasty and quite bad for you, refined sugar is everywhere.
If you're planning to cut down on your sugar in 2024, first become aware of where sugar is hiding. Check labels for maltodextrose, dextrose, caramel, corn syrup, diastatic malt, maltose, ethyl maltol, mannitol, glucose solids and trehalose.
These are some of the obscure names given to sugar. How can you avoid sugar when you don't know it's in the food you are eating?
Planning to be your "best self" in 2024?
Instead of waiting to be someone or something else, why not recognize all of the wonderful qualities within yourself right now?
The beauty of personal growth and evolution is in the process. It's not the destination but the journey that counts.
In case you hadn't noticed, in the last 14 days we have had one full day of sun in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).
If you are a human being and you live here, I can say with some certainty that your vitamin D stores are being depleted as you read this. Or maybe they're already so low, you can't make sense of what you're reading!
Want more out of 2024?
Start with your foundation. In health, that means addressing deficiencies. Start with checking your vitamin D levels and ensuring they're OPTIMAL, not just satisfactory.
Exercise might seem like a chore. Just like mowing the lawn or decluttering your basement, chores can offer a deep sense of accomplishment and reward.
Instead of making it hard on yourself, recruit support and make it fun. Find a friend and go for a forest walk, take in a hot yoga class with your partner, hire a trainer once a week to get in some much needed weight training.
The health benefits of exercise are undeniable:
- reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
- reduced risk of cancer
- increased dopamine (better mood and better focus)
- increased energy, strength and vitality and more!
For exercise into your schedule in 2024. Your body will thank you!
With the intention to be kind to ourselves, can we meet our goals gently and ease into healthy change and lifestyle in 2024?
Go back to the basics: bring mindful attending to your habitual patterns. Wherever there is a pattern that isn't serving you, there is a story that is driving it.
Making small shifts means becoming aware of where we are so we can make different choices in the next moment. These shifts alter our trajectory in the moments to come.
It all starts with awareness.
Instead of trying to take the holiday pounds off all at once, ease into small changes. An apple instead of ice cream; a dairy free latte instead of a double sweet mocha whip.
Small changes with the grounded intention to be healthy can have a lasting impact.

2024 is here. With every new year comes an opportunity to reflect and evaluate your energetic investments from the year past. Where did your energy go in 2023? Were these wise investments? Can you set mindful intentions for where you would like your energy to go in 2024? I have used this analogy many times: think of your energy like a bowl full of differently sized, little balls. The balls can be porcelain or glass or wood. Each ball represents a portion of your daily energy. Some tasks require a large ball or a few balls. Some tasks only require small balls. Once all the balls in the bowl are gone for the day, your energy has been depleted. Continuing to push yourself beyond depletion equates to using stores of energy that take from your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Have you noticed that your acne improves in the summer? There are a few reasons that this might be happening: -Acne has been linked to low vitamin D levels. Sun exposure naturally increases vitamin D levels and can help decrease the inflammation associated with acne in low vitamin D individuals. -UV light (from sun) has an antimicrobial effect which helps manage the bacteria that perpetuates acne. -UV light helps shrink pores in your skin decreasing the production of pore-clogging oils.
