Regulation isn’t suppressing an emotion or becoming detached from it.

It’s learning to remain close enough to experience what you feel while gaining enough perspective to understand it.

That space allows us to notice our thoughts, urges and automatic defenses before acting on them. With practice, we can explore what a reaction may be protecting and respond with greater intention.

Close enough to feel. Far enough to witness.

Emotions provide information about our needs, relationships, surroundings and internal state, but they don’t have to determine what we do next.

Learning to identify emotions more precisely can help us understand the signal beneath the reaction. Instead of simply feeling “bad,” we might recognize disappointment, fear, shame, grief or frustration.

The more accurately we can name an emotion, the more options we have for responding to it.

Emotions are information, not instructions.

Many men learn how to solve problems, meet expectations and keep moving, but not necessarily how to understand what is happening inside them.

Emotional regulation isn’t about eliminating difficult feelings. It begins with understanding how the brain and body respond to stress, why certain reactions become automatic, and what helps us regain choice.

The Regulated Mind is being developed as a practical introduction to emotional awareness, regulation and connection.

Understand. Regulate. Reconnect.

Thank you to the Medicine Hat News and reporter Anna Smith for featuring Reconnect Mental Health and helping raise awareness of rTMS treatment in our community.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share how this non-invasive treatment is helping create new options for people living with depression, especially when other approaches haven’t provided enough relief.

You can read the full article in the September 19 edition of the Medicine Hat News.

You don’t know exactly what tomorrow will bring.

Goals give us direction. But when we turn plans into rigid rules, every unexpected change can begin to feel like failure.

Cognitive flexibility is our ability to adjust our thinking, expectations, and approach as circumstances change—without losing sight of where we’re trying to go.

There’s an important catch: as psychological stress increases, cognitive flexibility often decreases. We can become more rigid, think in more black-and-white terms, and become more attached to how things “should” go.

That’s often when flexibility matters most.

Set a direction. Create guidelines. Adjust as you learn more.

The goal isn’t to follow the plan perfectly. It’s to keep moving in the direction that matters.

Sometimes the problem isn’t “just” your partner. It’s the amount of pressure your family system is under.

Think about a family with young children. Two parents might be trying to manage:

Work. Childcare. Finances. Cooking. Cleaning. Appointments. Activities. Sleep deprivation. Their children’s emotions. Their own emotions. Their relationship. Extended family. Friendships.

And somehow, they’re supposed to keep all of it running.
When the demands on a family become greater than its capacity, anxiety and overwhelm naturally increase.

But instead of recognizing:

“We are two people trying to manage a really demanding situation…”

It can slowly become:

“I’m overwhelmed because you’re not doing enough.”

And the other person thinks:

“No, I’m overwhelmed because of you.”

Now the stress affecting the whole family has become a problem between two people.

From a systems perspective, this is why context matters.
It doesn’t mean we aren’t responsible for how we behave—and it doesn’t mean relationship problems aren’t real.

It means that before deciding your partner is the problem, it can be helpful to zoom out and ask:

What is this family being asked to carry right now?

Sometimes the most important shift isn’t figuring out who is to blame. It’s recognizing that two overwhelmed people can start blaming each other for an overwhelm that neither of them created alone.

When we understand the larger system, we create more room for curiosity, compassion and working on the problem together.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to use both what we think and what we feel.

We take in information in different ways.

Some of it we can think through—facts, logic, context and perspective.

Some of it we sense and feel—emotions, body signals, intuition and our immediate experience.

Emotional intelligence means considering both when deciding what something means and what to do next.

It doesn’t mean ignoring our feelings.
It doesn’t mean being ruled by them.

Feel it. Think about it. Use both.

What does it mean to be your authentic self?

An emotion or reaction can be genuinely happening in the moment without necessarily reflecting who you are at your core. Anger, withdrawal or defensiveness may be authentic experiences—but they can also be protective ways of regulating difficult emotions.

Group therapy offers a space where every part of your experience is welcome, including your defence mechanisms. With curiosity and awareness, we can begin to understand these reactions without taking them personally—and create opportunities to respond differently in the future.

We aren’t meant to regulate everything on our own. From our earliest years, the brain is learning through connection. A calm voice, a steady presence, a feeling of safety — these small moments help a child’s nervous system settle and gradually build the capacity to regulate from within.

This is co-regulation: one nervous system helping another find balance. And it doesn’t require perfect attunement. What matters is the ability to reconnect, repair and return to safety. Over time, those experiences help shape the way we manage stress, emotion and relationships.

Connection isn’t just comforting. It’s part of how the brain develops — and part of how we continue to heal and grow.

What does rTMS actually do to the brain? 🧠

Depression is associated with changes in the activity of brain networks involved in mood and emotional regulation.
rTMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), an area of the brain that can be underactive in depression.
Think of it as helping to “turn up” activity in this region and influence the connected networks involved in mood.
Treatment is:

• Non-invasive
• No anesthesia
• No medication required during treatment
