Psynergy Centre Health and Wellness understands and recognizes the continued impact of sexual violence The media coverage of the Cornell Sexual Assault represents a story of many.

“While it may seem that we have culturally made serious progress in reducing sexual violence, the reality is that society goes through cycles of backlash with regards to equity and civil rights (and sexual violence is a matter of equity and civil rights). This was documented by Susan Faludi, in her 1991 book Backlash; and has been noted as a social phenomenon not just with gender equity, but with race, religious freedom, q***r rights, and democracy writ large. People who have been silenced see an opening to be heard; it becomes en vogue to celebrate justice and diversity; then the threat to the status quo becomes intolerable and it becomes equally popular to “break free” from the restrictions of decency. So here we are: in a moment where we see clearly that the fight for equity and justice has to be as loud as ever.” -Trauma Research Foundation

The increased media coverage of sexual violence due by the Cornell lawsuit, may bring up feelings of their own trauma. There will be more stories to come forward. If you are unsure how to be present and support the people sharing these stories here are some ideas as suggested by the Trauma Research Foundation.
1. These stories can be activating for us and hard to hear. If you aren’t in a place to receive a story, and it’s not your professional obligation to be part of their recovery journey or their pursuit of justice, it’s okay to kindly tell someone that “it’s too close to home” to hear more and be supportive.
2. Consider that sexual violence includes the loss of agency. Help to restore personal agency by offering choices for support and resources.
3. Tell them you believe them, they need to hear it.
4. Learn about local resources and share them.
5. Learn about how to recognize that a situation may be an assault and how to intervene.
If these stories are personal for you, maybe as a survivor of sexual violence yourself or as someone who loves one, please know that you are valued and worthy of fighting for. As a mental health network and provider we stand with you and support you.
We believe you. 💚

Children and teenagers aren’t just using AI for schoolwork. They’re turning to it for friendship, advice, and support.

Psychologists say these trends raise important questions about what happens to social and emotional development when AI fills roles that used to belong to other people.
