Where did the phrase "Every child matters", come from?

• The Orange Shirt: In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis went to the St. Joseph Mission residential school near Williams Lake, BC. Her grandmother had bought her a bright, shiny orange shirt for her first day, which made her feel excited and important.

• Confiscation: When she arrived at the school, school authorities stripped her, took away her clothes—including the orange shirt—and never gave it back.

• The Feeling That She Didn't Matter: Phyllis later shared that the color orange came to symbolize how her feelings and worth did not matter to the people running the institution.

• Orange Shirt Day: In 2013, a reunion was held to commemorate the residential school's impact, where Phyllis shared her story. This led to the creation of Orange Shirt Day, established on September 30th to honor survivors and remember the children who never returned home.

• A National Rallying Cry: The phrase "Every Child Matters" was adopted as the core slogan for Orange Shirt Day and the broader movement for truth, reconciliation, and awareness surrounding the Canadian Indian residential school system.

Pooh stood quietly for a while before saying, “Eeyore, do you think someone can be gone and still be here?”

Eeyore looked toward the place where they used to be. “That doesn’t sound possible, Pooh.”

“I know,” Pooh said softly. “But sometimes I hear something they would have laughed at, and suddenly I remember their laugh.”

“I remember little things too,” Eeyore whispered. “The things they said. The way they made ordinary days feel less ordinary.”

“Perhaps that’s how they stay.”

“In memories?”

“In everything,” said Pooh. “In the places we went together, in the things they taught us, and in the part of our hearts that became different because we loved them.”

Eeyore lowered his head. “But remembering can hurt.”

“Yes,” Pooh replied. “Because for one little moment, they feel close enough to touch… and then you remember that you can’t.”

“Does that ever stop hurting?”

“I don’t know,” Pooh admitted. “Maybe we simply learn that missing them and loving them are two sides of the same thing.”

Eeyore looked up at the little bird resting on Pooh’s paw. “So when something beautiful reminds me of them…”

“Don’t be afraid of it,” Pooh said. “Perhaps it’s just love finding another way to visit.”

And beneath the quiet trees, they understood that goodbye can take someone from our sight, but it cannot erase all the places where love has left its footprints.
