Have you ever felt anxious...and had no idea why?

Nothing is really wrong. The day is fine. And yet your chest is tight, your shoulders are up by your ears, and you just can’t settle. Honestly...so many of us feel this.

Sometimes our bodies brace in the middle of the things we love most. On a hike. Spending time with family. Moments that are supposed to feel easy.

And we have to gently remind ourselves...
Let your jaw go.
Breathe.
You’re safe.

We’re all still learning that we’re allowed to have moments of calm. And that it’s okay to let ourselves feel them.

But so often, we meet that bracing the same way.

What’s wrong with me?
Why can’t I just relax?
I should be fine.

But here’s something we wish more people knew...

Your nervous system is always quietly asking one question. Am I safe right now?

It’s scanning the room, the people around you and what’s happening inside your body. Mostly without you even noticing.

And sometimes it picks up on things that remind it of a harder time. Or it’s simply used to being on guard, even when life is good. Your body responds first. Your thinking brain catches up later.

So that feeling isn’t you being dramatic or too sensitive. It’s your body doing its job...trying to keep you safe.

That doesn’t mean you just have to live with it. But it might mean you can meet it with a little more curiosity, and a little less judgment.

Instead of what’s wrong with me...maybe try, what might my body be noticing right now?

And sometimes, gently letting it know...I’m safe enough to soften here.

Save this one for the next time it happens 🤍

I think we give ourselves a lot of rules without even realizing it.

I should be productive.
I should be enjoying this.
I should be handling this better.
I should finish what I started.
I should know what I need.

For me, it’s that first one.
I love creating and planning and dreaming up what’s next. But I’m still learning when to pause. When to slow down. That I don’t need to be doing something all of the time.

I can sit and read a book...and that is enough.

And sometimes I think we all need a little less “should” and a little more permission.

Permission to have an off day.
Permission to enjoy something just because you enjoy it.
Permission to be having a hard time with something hard.
Permission to leave something unfinished.
Permission to not know yet.

None of those things mean you’re falling behind.

So consider this your little permission slip 🤍

A little life lately 🤍

The ordinary moments, the things we’ve been doing, the bits of life in between everything else.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how easy it is to move through our days without really noticing them. We’re often thinking about what’s next, what needs to get done, who needs us, or what we haven’t quite managed to fit in.

And sometimes, the things that make a day feel good are the smallest things. A laugh, a slower morning, a moment outside, or feeling like you can finally exhale.
I’m trying to make a little more room for those moments, too.

So here’s a little glimpse of life lately. Nothing particularly extraordinary. Just life, as it is 🤍

I’m so happy to finally introduce you to Zoe, who is joining us our Nurturing Roots Wellness family 🤍

As we’ve grown, one of the things that has mattered most to me is bringing people onto the team who not only have the experience and knowledge to support our clients well, but who also genuinely align with the kind of space I want Nurturing Roots to be.

Zoe is warm, thoughtful, down-to-earth, and someone I’m really excited to have alongside us.

✨ Meet Zoe ✨

I’m passionate about creating a space where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and accepted for who they are. As a Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree, my approach is strengths-based, client-centred, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I believe you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to walk alongside you as you navigate what’s feeling difficult or uncertain.

I support individuals and families navigating mental health, emotional, and behavioural challenges across different ages and stages of life. I also have specialized training in counselling donor-conceived individuals and a particular interest in supporting individuals and families navigating donor conception and assisted reproduction.

I believe therapy can hold space for difficult conversations while still leaving room for connection, humour, and lightness. Most importantly, I want you to feel like you can bring your whole self into the room.

Outside of the office, you might find me at a concert or comedy show, spending time with my husband and our fur baby, or enjoying a day by the water.

We’re so happy to have you here, Zoe. 🌿🤍

I’ve been noticing this in myself lately as we move further into fall.

There are things I naturally start wanting more of this time of year. More cozy mornings. More time at home. More quiet. More structure after the slower pace of summer.

And I’ve also noticed that sometimes what I want and what I think I should want aren’t quite the same thing.

Maybe I’m craving a slower morning, but my brain is telling me I should be getting more done. Maybe I want more quiet, but I’ve filled the calendar back up. Maybe I need more rest, but I’m already thinking about everything that needs to get done before the end of the year.

So I thought it might be nice to just pause and ask: What am I actually reaching for right now?

Not what would make me more productive. Not what I think I should be doing. Just...what do I want more of?

Maybe it’s more sleep.
Maybe it’s more movement.
Maybe it’s more connection.
Maybe it’s more time outside.
Maybe it’s more space.

And maybe it’s something completely different. I think there’s something really helpful about getting curious about those little wants instead of immediately talking ourselves out of them.

So, if you checked in with yourself today...What are you reaching for more of this fall? 🍂

You may know George as the osteopath at Nurturing Roots - the quiet, grounded presence who has a way of making people feel like they can exhale.

But to me, he’s also the person who has been beside me through all of this. Six months after having our daughter, I told him I wanted to bring a dream to life. I wanted to build something that felt more aligned. I didn’t have every detail figured out, I just knew I needed to create something that felt meaningful.

And he didn’t bat an eye. He just said, essentially, okay...let’s figure it out. And we’ve been figuring it out ever since.

The late nights. The big ideas. The growing pains of building something that started as just me and has slowly become so much more.

George has always been genuinely curious about people and the way the body works. He’s also the one who notices the little details happening day to day that I sometimes miss because I’m already ten steps ahead.

I’m the dreamer and the planner. He’s the detail-noticer. And somehow, we do okay together. 😂

This was never really about building a clinic. It was about creating something that felt more aligned with the way I wanted to live and work and having George beside me through that has meant more than I probably say enough.

Don’t get me wrong, working together isn’t always easy. Sometimes work comes home with us and shows up in places we’re trying to protect. Sometimes working side by side is a lot. But I’m really proud of what we’ve built.

And mostly, I’m grateful that when I said, I think I need to build something different, he was right there beside me.

So, if you haven’t met George yet, that’s him - osteopath, dad, partner in this little adventure, the detail-noticer to my dreamer, and someone who’s been part of this story from the very beginning 🤍

I don’t think we always realize how much energy transitions take. Even the good ones.

A new school year. A new job. A new routine. A baby. A move. A change in your schedule. Even just moving from one season into another.

Sometimes you can look around at your life and think, nothing is really wrong...so why do I feel so off?

I’ve noticed this in my own life too.

Summer has always been a season where I do a little less. Less work, less house stuff, less trying to get everything done. There’s something about summer that makes me want to slow down and leave a little more room for just being.

And then fall comes, and I slowly start adding those things back in. More planning. More organizing. More creativity. More wanting our home to feel cozy and good for the time of year when we’ll be spending more time in it.
None of it is bad. In fact, a lot of it is stuff I really enjoy.

But every year, I find myself re-learning the balance of moving from one rhythm of life into another.
My energy has shifted. My days look different. And I need a little time to find my footing again.

I think we can be pretty hard on ourselves about that. We expect ourselves to settle in quickly. To get back into a routine. To feel like ourselves again.

But maybe we don’t need to rush that part. Maybe we need a little more sleep. A little less pressure. A little more space to figure out what this new version of everyday life feels like.

September always feels a little different. The mornings are darker, the air feels cooler, and summer is slowly giving way to routines, school, work, earlier bedtimes and calendars filling up again.

But honestly, I love fall so much. It might actually be the season I thrive in. I love the cozy days, all things pumpkin, fall fairs and apple picking, fall hikes and fires in the evening. There’s something about adventures that just feels better in the fall. And I love a good routine and the rhythm that comes with this time of year.

But I’m also missing summer. I miss the warmth, the after-dinner beach walks, deciding on a whim that we’re going to the beach, and eating our meals outside simply because we can.

I think that’s something I notice about changing seasons, there can be so many feelings happening at the same time. We can love where we are and still miss what we’re leaving behind. We can be excited for what’s here and feel a little heaviness about what’s coming.

Lately, I’ve been trying to notice the little things instead of getting too caught up in what has passed or what’s ahead. The leaves changing on my way to the office, the pumpkins starting to appear, the darker mornings, and how much more I’m reaching for hot coffee, tea and meals that warm me from the inside out.

Because if I’m honest, the thought of the shorter days and less sunlight can feel a little heavy.

So for now, I’m just trying to stay here, noticing and enjoying what I love about this season, while allowing myself to miss the one before it.

Maybe we don’t have to choose 🤍

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how quickly I go into “just keep going.”

I’m tired? Keep going.
There’s a lot to do? Keep going.
Something didn’t get done today? I’ll just do it tomorrow.

I’ve always been pretty good at pushing through. And honestly, that part of me has gotten me through a lot. But I’m learning that I don’t always have to.

Sometimes I can take the walk.
Go to yoga.
Leave something until tomorrow.
Say no.
Let something be good enough.

None of that feels particularly revolutionary. But when you’re used to pushing through, slowing down can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

I’m learning that slowing down doesn’t mean I’m less capable. Sometimes it just means I’m listening to myself a little sooner.

And I’m still learning how to do that. 🤍

I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to feel better.

To calm down.
To stop overthinking.
To get out of whatever uncomfortable feeling we’re in as quickly as possible.

And I understand why. When something feels uncomfortable, our instinct can be to do something about it.

Find the tool.
Change the thought.
Distract ourselves.
Figure it out.

And sometimes that’s exactly what we need. There are moments when grounding, movement, connection, rest, or stepping away can help us feel more settled.

But I also think there’s something really important about learning that we don’t have to fix every feeling.

We can be anxious and remind ourselves, I don’t have to make this disappear right now. We can be sad and let the sadness be there. We can feel uncertain without immediately needing to know what happens next. We can feel the urge to react and give ourselves a little space before deciding what we want to do.

And that doesn’t mean forcing ourselves to sit in something that feels unbearable. It means slowly learning that an uncomfortable feeling can be here without becoming an emergency.

That takes time.
It takes practice.
And it takes being gentle with ourselves along the way.

Because regulation isn’t always about getting back to calm as quickly as possible.

Sometimes it’s learning:

I can feel this.
I can stay connected to myself.
I don’t have to figure it all out right now.

And I can take care of myself while this feeling moves through me. 🤍
