At least 15% of the population of Syria lives with disabilities.139 A recent assessment on disability among adults in western Aleppo, Idleb and Ar-Raqqa governorates revealed that an average of 45% of surveyed persons injured during the Syria crisis are expected to sustain a permanent impairment and require specialist support which will far outlast the crisis.

Sarmada Rehab Centre is filling the gap and providing much-needed physiotherapy, nursing, and lab services. With your generous donations, we are building hope and saving lives.

The UN declared October 11th to be International Day of the Girl Child to celebrate the rights of girls and bring attention to the unique challenges they face all around the world. This is a day where we encourage young girls to overcome barriers but also do our part to break these barriers.

Let today be a reminder to celebrate the achievements and courage of young girls as well as advocate for their human rights.

World Mental Health Day started in 1992 and began with the hope of spreading awareness about mental health issues and increasing support to those suffering from mental illness. Mental health is as pressing as physical health and should be taken just as seriously.

This year’s theme, “Mental Health in an Unequal World” focuses on the disparities of access to mental health services. 75-95% of people with mental health disorders in low- and middle-income countries do not have access to mental health services, and with many refugees and internally displaced people living under the poverty line and exposed to difficult circumstances, access to these services is especially important.

As UOSSM-Canada continues to provide mental health care and destigmatize mental illness with your support, we urge you to fight mental health stigma in your communities as well.

COVID Positivity Rate at 55% in Northwest Syria; Situation Dire - Syrian Arab Republic

"Countries experiencing protracted conflict are in an extremely difficult position to effectively respond to the Covid-19 pandemic," says Dr. Anas Al-Kassem, the co-founder of UOSSM and the Vice-Chairman of UOSSM-Canada. "Given the low vaccination rates, shortages of essential medical supplies, and high positivity rate- Northwest Syria is in a dire situation. The support of the international community is key in tackling the pandemic and ensuring the health and safety of everyone".

#UOSSM continues to respond to the #COVID-19 pandemic by operating community based isolation centers (CBIC) to provide care for and help isolate Covid cases.

The positivity rate is lingering around 55% while only 2.5% of the population in northwest #Syria have been vaccinated. There is a major shortage of oxygen, hospital beds and ICUs- further complicating the dire situation.

A 32-year-old woman was complaining of psychosomatic symptoms which included body pains, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. She also complained of irritability, feeling of worthlessness, and trouble thinking among other issues. With the help of a psychologist at the centre, she was able to learn stress management techniques, make lifestyle changes, and enforce positive thinking. Mustafa was in a terrible car accident. He was in a coma for three months. His family was terrified that he would never wake up. Thankfully, he did wake up, but with serious medical problems.

He was bedridden, unable to stand or walk on his own. His parents were devastated... Until one day, one of his doctors suggested physical therapy. His family took him to Sarmada #Rehabilitation Center.

After months of hard work and dedication Mustafa is able to take a few steps on his own!

Thanks to our supporters Mustafa and countless others have hope for a normal life!

The International Day of Peace is a day where 24 hours of ceasefire and non-violence is observed to strengthen the ideals of peace.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized existing inequities and brought to light how marginalized groups are more affected by the pandemic in comparison to other groups. By April 2021, 687 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. Yet, over 100 countries have not received even a single dose. This year, along with supporting international ceasefire and non-violence, we also recognize the need to promote an equitable COVID-19 reponse to help those in need recover from and deal with this virus.

9% of the world’s population is severely food insecure while 8.8% are undernourished. That is around 697 million people globally. And with the continuing effects of the pandemic, this number is increasing.

On World Food Day, let us fight for basic human rights, the right to access healthy food and water. Let us stand in solidarity so we can help those suffering from food insecurity recover and grow stronger food systems.
