Once considered radical, Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole’s method of intuitive eating has become the cornerstone of the modern anti-diet movement.

I was initially introduced to this mind frame switch when learning how to provide trauma-informed care, however, I think it’s great for everyone to apply.

Instead of assuming someone has mal-intent, is crazy or just plain bad, take a moment to consider their trauma. The way people act and treat you is more often a reflection of their attitudes and the trauma that they carry.

Also, don’t forget to extend the same compassion to yourself🤗 If/when you act out, reflect on why you acted that way rather than judging yourself.

Ex: someone struggling with an eating disorder gives into one of their compulsions. Instead of beginning the cycle of blame and self-hatred, they remind themselves that their compulsions once were an effective way of regulating their emotions and keeping them safe. They are just practicing what they know and challenging that is difficult.

A few weeks ago I met with a client and asked her how she felt about her body. She said she hates it because it’s a representation of her biggest failure in life.

My heart aches for her. We don’t choose our body weight and shape; they cannot be manipulated in the long term. No one deserves to be led to believe that their body is a reflection of their worth. This is the devastating culmination of widespread fatphobia. If this isn’t a reason to fight, I don’t know what is💗👊🏼

I’m currently reading a very well esteemed book within the eating disorder community and I’m taken aback by the overwhelming amount of weight stigma.

Essentially, the author is insinuating that all people with “obesity” overeat; he suggests that they can experience periods of dietary restraint but that overall, they’re intaking a sufficient amount of calories for their bodies to function properly. I know first handedly that this is not true. In fact, this can be super damaging and invalidating to those in larger bodies suffering from anorexia.

It is possible to chronically undereat and remain in a fat body. Read that again.

If you live in a larger body and over-evaluate your weight and shape and base your self-worth on your ability to control the two, I see you. Your experience with anorexia is just as valid as any other and you are just as deserving of help. There are many weight-inclusive healthcare professionals waiting to start your recovery journey with you💗

A very wise person once said that we need to stop “should-ing” all over the place.

If we’re thinking that we should do something, it means that we’re experiencing some sort of internal conflict; we’re torn between expectation and what we truly desire in the moment.

If we do what we “should” (ex: order a salad instead of the fried shrimp tacos), we’re left feeling unsatisfied and unhappy. And, if we don’t do what we believe we “should” (ex: ordering the fried shrimp tacos), we feel guilt and shame. Should-ing makes for a lose/lose situation.

The solution? Catch yourself when you’re should-ing and reframe it with an “I will _____ because _____” statement. For example, instead of thinking “I should order a salad because it’s more nutritious than fried shrimp tacos”, think “I will order fried shrimp tacos because that’s what I want right now and honouring my cravings is crucial for developing a healthy relationship with food.” 🍤🌮😋

To suggest that it’s okay for thin people in recovery to binge in response to restriction, but not for fat people, is fatphobic.

Challenging your anti-fat bias can be difficult, I get it. It’s not easy to shake deeply ingrained beliefs. If, however, you find yourself getting defensive, acknowledge that and get curious as to why🤔

Too many people carry the false narrative that those suffering from type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglycerides are to blame for their condition. Yes, lifestyle factors can play a role in prevention and management, but these diseases develop largely for reasons beyond our control (genetics, environment, socioeconomic status, stress, access to unbiased health care, discrimination, etc.)

If you don’t have a clean bill of health, it’s not because you did something wrong. And, conversely, if you do have a clean bill of health, it’s not because you’ve done something right. If you don’t battle with type 2 diabetes or heart disease it is a privilege, not an accomplishment. Let’s end the stigma.

I’m a professional but I’m also human and I make mistakes.

What I will always do is listen, reflect and challenge my beliefs to learn and grow.

So, I’m sorry for centering my thin body and taking the spotlight off of marginalized bodies that need to be seen and normalized. I will do better❤️

Back when I was studying dietetics, we were told that patients in larger bodies claiming to eat a little were lying. We were told they’re just embarrassed to tell us about their binges or that they’re under-reporting their intake.

Now I know that body size is not reflective of someone’s habits and that food restriction is always a disordered behaviour, regardless of weight.

Fighting fatphobia in the healthcare system is an uphill battle but I’m hopeful we’ll eventually get to a place where ALL patients are believed and respected💕

I want to make something very clear… I am anti-diet culture, not anti-people who fall victim to it💕

With society’s conflation of weight/health and worth/beauty, I more than understand the desire to lose weight and fit into traditional beauty standards. I still find myself getting caught up in it sometimes. It really is a continuous effort to fight diet culture messaging.

My goal is never to shame anyone for pursuing weight loss or engaging in a diet; it is only to shed light on an alternative approach to nutrition that honours all aspects of our wellbeing.

I started listening to Demi Lovato’s newly launched podcast and, while listening to the first episode, I heard this lovely quote.

It’s a powerful reminder that we must let go of shame in the pursuit of joy. There is nothing more liberating than releasing those feelings of embarrassment and distress and just letting yourself be💞

06/29/2021

I hear so many people blame emotions for their overeating or binge eating. In attempt to stop, they then ban themselves from ‘emotional eating’, which, as restriction always does, leads to even more overeating and bingeing😱‼️

When we are overwhelmed with emotion, our cognitive brain loses its ability to control our primal brain. This means that logic and plans of sticking to food rules get thrown out the window. Our hungry and unsatisfied primal brain takes over and drives our actions. This is why dieters overeat or binge when feeling intense emotions. If, however, you have a healthy relationship with food (consistently honour both hunger & cravings), you will find that your primal brain resorts to other soothing behaviours in times of distress.

Now, this isn’t to say that we won’t have the urge to eat to soothe emotions, we will, and that’s okay. BUT eating won’t be the only soothing activity we want to engage in since our basic physiological need for food is met.

So, instead of focusing on emotional eating, start paying more attention to your relationship with food✊🏼

In honour of I want to talk about microagressions…

Microaggressions are common slights that communicate hostile, derogatory or negative attitudes toward stigmatized or culturally marginalized groups. Most of the time they are unintentional and go unacknowledged.

I’ve recently been affected by microagressions related to my sexual orientation and I can assure you that while the words may be different, the implications are the same and the effects are just as damaging.

For this pride month, let’s bring awareness to microagressions so that we can fight discrimination of all forms✌🏻🏳️‍🌈❤️

Diet culture wants you to think that you’re crazy for following your bodies cues. It does such a good job of convincing us that we must control what we put into our mouths, and that if we don’t, we’ll end up gaining copious amounts of weight and end up lonely and miserable.

I can’t even begin to tell you how far this is from the truth…

We drink when we’re thirsty, we sleep when we’re tired, we go to the bathroom when we feel the urge, so why is it such a wild thought to eat what we’re craving when we’re hungry?

I am so much happier and healthier without you diet culture✌🏻👋🏻

We all have different genetically determined weight ranges that our bodies function optimally at. When we try and deviate away from that range, our bodies resist and try to bring us back.

If you went on a diet and are struggling to keep your weight off, you are not a failure and you are not alone. Your body is just trying to bring you back to it’s unique healthy range.

My suggestion is to ditch the scale and instead focus on respecting your body. Eat when you’re hungry, eat nutrient dense foods as well as foods that bring you joy. Move your body in ways that feel good and rest when you’re tired.

Our bodies are literally wired for survival; trust it’s cues.

Diet culture does a good job of shaming us when we eat for pleasure. When we choose pizza over the salad or decide to have dessert, we’re pegged as gluttonous and undisciplined.

I’m here to remind you that eating for pleasure is no less important than eating for physical health. In fact, If we didn’t eat for pleasure, our lives would not be as fulfilling or joyous.

Anyone that passes judgement on your food choices is just projecting their own disordered relationship with food onto you. I said what I said...😌🙊

This trend of “what I eat in a day” is super popular right now on social media. People think that if they eat and move in the exact same way as their favourite influencer, they will look just like them. This is NOT true! Regardless of our diet and exercise habits, we all look different and that’s the beauty of our individuality💫

We all have different nutritional needs and cravings and comparing what we eat to what others eat is damaging (!!). It causes guilt and shame if our meals/snacks don’t match up and nobody needs that🙅🏻‍♀️

Hands up if this diagram resonates with you🙋🏻‍♀️

If you find yourself overeating in the evening trying to curb what feels like an insatiable hunger, chances are you aren’t eating enough during the day. This happens often with dieters who try to eat as minimally as possible throughout the day.

To stop this from happening, you need to honour your hunger and give your body the energy it needs throughout the day to prevent compensation in the evening!

Anti-diet does not mean anti-health🤭💥

In fact, it’s the opposite! The anti-diet approach is actually health promoting.

To ensure that we get our individualized and varying energy and nutrient needs, we must listen to and honour our hunger, fullness and cravings. Unfortunately, these are the very cues that dieting teaches us to ignore.

As an anti-diet dietitian, I encourage eating nutrient dense foods and moving in a way that feels good. I just leave out the restriction, guilt and shame👌🏻

Adopting healthy habits does not result in weight loss for everyone. In fact, some may even gain weight on their journey to health and that is SCARY, I get it!!

We live in a society where thinness is praised and equated to moral virtue so I honestly don’t even blame you for being afraid. BUT allow yourself to question whether or not this is right.

What would life be like if you could pursue health without worrying about how you look? What would you do differently and how would you feel?

Have you ever lost weight in attempt to improve your body-image just to realize that your insecurities are still there?

If yes, you’re not alone!

Sure losing weight comes with feelings of pride and accomplishment as people applaud you for all your hard work. You may even feel more attractive because of new attention. Unfortunately though, these feelings are fleeting. Soon after you’ll begin to worry about maintaining your lost weight and you’ll notice other parts of your appearance that need fixing.

Improving your relationship with your body is an inside job💕
