🦴 Lumbar Traction: Can It Help Your Low Back Pain?

Lumbar traction is a treatment technique used to gently decompress the spine by creating space between the vertebrae.

For some individuals, this can help reduce pressure on spinal structures and provide relief from symptoms.

✅ Potential Benefits of Lumbar Traction

• May reduce nerve root compression
• May help relieve radiating leg pain (sciatica)
• May decrease muscle guarding and spasms
• May improve comfort with movement
• May temporarily reduce pressure on spinal discs and joints
• Can be used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program

🔹 Different Ways Lumbar Traction Can Be Performed

1️⃣ Mechanical Traction
Using a traction table that applies a controlled pulling force to the lower back.

2️⃣ Manual Traction
Performed by a physiotherapist using their hands or other devices to create gentle decompression.

3️⃣ Positional Traction
Using pillows, wedges, or specific body positions to reduce stress on spinal structures.

4️⃣ Home-Based Traction
Certain exercises and stretches, such as hanging from a bar or using a stability ball, may provide a traction-like effect for some individuals.

⚠️ Important: Lumbar traction is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. It tends to work best for specific conditions and should be combined with exercise, education, and movement-based rehabilitation for lasting results.

If you’re dealing with low back pain or pain traveling into your leg, a physiotherapy assessment can help determine whether traction may be appropriate for you.

Patient Spotlight: Mike’s ACDF Recovery Journey

7 Months Post-Operation

Recovery from spinal surgery takes dedication, patience, and a willingness to trust the process.

Today we’re celebrating Mike and the tremendous progress he’s made just 7 months after ACDF surgery.

What is ACDF Surgery?
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a procedure used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots in the neck. The damaged disc is removed and the affected vertebrae are fused together to restore stability, reduce pain, and improve neurological function.

Mike’s Progress So Far
Over the past 7 months, Mike has worked consistently toward rebuilding his strength, endurance, and confidence.

✅ Increased walking tolerance and overall activity levels

✅ Improved muscular endurance for daily activities

✅ Significant strength gains through progressive rehabilitation

✅ Successfully returned to work

✅ Increased independence with home, work, and recreational activities

✅ Improved confidence in movement and physical activity

One of the Biggest Lessons in Recovery
A major part of rehabilitation after ACDF isn’t just getting stronger—it’s learning what your body can tolerate and understanding that recovery is a gradual process.

For Mike, this has meant:

🔹 Learning when to push and when to rest

🔹 Understanding which activities are manageable and which still require modification

🔹 Building confidence in movement without fear

🔹 Developing strategies to manage symptoms and avoid setbacks

Recovery is rarely a straight line.

Some days feel easier than others, but each challenge provides an opportunity to learn and continue moving forward.

Mike’s progress is a reminder that successful rehabilitation isn’t about rushing the process—it’s about showing up consistently, embracing the challenges, and celebrating every step forward.

Great work, Mike. We look forward to seeing what the next chapter of your recovery brings!

🌟 Patient Spotlight: Donna’s TKR Recovery Journey 🌟

At 10 weeks post–total knee replacement, Donna was doing everything right… but still felt stuck.

👉 Limited knee flexion
👉 Persistent quad inhibition
👉 Frustration with slow progress

She had already tried multiple approaches to improve her bend — stretching, mobility work, and strengthening — but her quad just wasn’t firing the way it needed to.

💡 That’s when we introduced Phoenix Waveform Neurotherapy.

⚡ The shift:

By targeting the nervous system and improving quad activation, we were able to:

✅ Reconnect the brain to the muscle

✅ Improve quad recruitment

✅ Support better knee flexion

✅ Build confidence in movement again

🏋️‍♀️ Combined with focused rehab exercises, after Donna’s 1st session she is:

➡️ Moving with less discomfort and restriction

➡️ Seeing improvements in knee flexion already

➡️ Feeling stronger and more in control

Every recovery journey is different — sometimes you just need the right tool at the right time.

🚀 If you’re feeling stuck after surgery, there are always options.
