A stroke can happen any where, at any time. One in three stroke survivors are diagnosed with aphasia, a communication disorder that can rob an individual of their ability to speak, despite knowing exactly what they would like to say.

"Imagine if... the last sentence you speak tonight is the last full sentence you speak for the rest of your life." Steve Goff, an individual living with aphasia.

What is the last thing you said? Imagine that it is the last full sentence you speak for the rest of your life.

Share this post in your story and fill in the last thing you said out loud. Feel free to tag others to share their last spoken utterance. Let's raise aphasia awareness together.

#aphasia #aphasiaawareness

To share in your story follow the following steps:
On a phone or iPad:

3. Add the last thing you said into the speech bubble by pressing the Aa icon on the top right hand side of the screen.

It’s aphasia awareness month!

We started the celebrations this year with the Burlington Pier Lighting at Spencer Park in honour of #aphasiaawareness.

Two of our board members wore their #aphasia masks to help others become more aphasia aware.

Where will you wear your aphasia mask? Tag us on an essential trip out (remember to maintain social distancing) and help spread the word!

We believe in improving communicative accessibility for individuals with #aphasia and other communication disorders.

One of our SLPs has created aphasia-friendly resources to help individuals with aphasia who want to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

These materials allow someone with aphasia to understand the questions being asked, know how to prepare for your appointment, and help you to respond independently.

Imagine going to your vaccination appointment and there was no accessible parking, no push buttons, and no elevator to get to the vaccine clinic. We are very aware of physical accessibility but what about communication accessibility? Consider these "communication ramps" and help spread the word.

Happy National Caregiver Day!

Our H-PCAP team wants to take a moment to say thank you to all of you for the tremendous work you do every day to support your loved ones with aphasia. Whether it is supporting your loved ones’ communication; helping with activities of daily living; or providing emotional support; we know that it is a hard journey and that your efforts may go unrecognized. We see you and appreciate you, and have great respect for all of you.

Some days you may feel very alone in your journey. Please know that we’re here to support you, not just your loved one with aphasia.

Please take some time today to reflect on all the wonderful support you’ve provided and take time for yourselves – whether it’s a walk in the sunshine, a phone call with a friend, reading a book, or sitting quietly with a cup of coffee. It’s important to take care of yourselves and you deserve it!

We spent this morning talking aphasia and communication πŸ—£οΈ

This training ended up having an informal Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) focus due to the needs of the individuals attending.

We were impressed by the amazing questions and, as always, the value in sharing experiences. What a great Saturday morning!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend H-PCAP community! 😊
