The Coloplast Story
The Coloplast story begins back in 1954. Elise Sørensen is a nurse. Her sister Thora has just had an ostomy operation and is afraid to go out in public, fearing that her stoma might leak. Listening to her sister’s problems, Elise conceives the idea of the world’s first adhesive ostomy bag.
Based on Elise’s idea, Aage Louis-Hansen, a civil engineer and plastics manufacturer, and his wife Johanne Louis-Hansen, a trained nurse, created the ostomy bag. An ostomy bag that helps Thora – and thousands of people like her – to live the life they want to lead.
A simple solution that makes a difference.
Today, our business includes Ostomy Care, Continence Care, Wound & Skin Care and Urology Care. We operate globally and employ about 11,000 employees.

October is National Spina Bifida Awareness Month, and for many living with the condition, one of the unseen side effects is neurogenic bowel. For Lori Neal, whose son Julian was born with spina bifida and neurogenic bowel, managing the condition initially meant relying on enemas, the only option available at the time. She recalls that they were a nightmare, and both she and Julian’s quality of life suffered. Desperation sent her to social media, where she learned about Peristeen® Transanal Irrigation System (now Peristeen Plus), which she has successfully used for over seven years. Peristeen Plus has helped manage Julian’s neurogenic bowel more reliably, which has enabled Lori and Julian to live an active life doing the things they enjoy together.
There are countless others, like Lori and Julian, who could benefit from Peristeen Plus for neurogenic bowel management. To learn more about Peristeen Plus, how it works, and which patients may benefit, click here:

October is Women’s History Month! This month we celebrate the women and girls who have and are contributing to make the world a better and more inclusive place.
Did you know Elise Sørensen, a Danish nurse, conceived the idea of the world’s first adhesive bag in the early 1950s? The invention came to be by the dramatic change in her sister’s lifestyle following an ostomy operation. Elise’s sister no longer wanted to go out, fearing that her stoma would leak in public.
This simple solution continues to help Canadians with ostomies live the life that they want to lead.
It's Invisible Disabilities Week!
Invisible disabilities can restrict or challenge a person’s movements, senses, or daily activities. This week we're raising awareness about hidden disabilities!
Many people struggling with hidden disabilities may use a catheter or wear an ostomy bag. That's why at Coloplast our passion centers around hearing real-life stories from people to develop solutions that are sensitive to their individual intimate healthcare needs. Let’s use this week to learn, listen, and amplify the voices that often go unheard.
Featured in this image is our ambassador Renee () from Ontario. Renee lived with Crohn’s disease for over 25 years and now uses an ostomy bag! You can read her story here:

Today is Global Handwashing Day, a day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of proper handwashing with soap and water to prevent diseases. Many of us understand the importance of washing and sanitizing our hands during flu and cold season, but proper handwashing as a catheter user can be essential in preventing contamination to the catheter and helping reduce the risk of infections.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we honour the Survivors, the children who never made it back, and their families and communities, who have been impacted by the painful and tragic history of residential schools.
Coloplast Canada acknowledges that we are located on Indigenous lands and we are gathering on land that has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years before us, through to the current day. We recognize that these lands include Treaties 14 and 22. Oakville, as it is currently known, is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations, Anishinaabe Nation, Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. These nations are the guardians of this land. We encourage you to reflect and acknowledge about the land that you are on and to understand more about reconciliation.
