I got a lot of DMs after my Mindful Eating reel yesterday - so many of us struggle with this practice, and for good reason. It’s challenging!
.
The idea of waiting for food to “cool down” gets ME heated...especially when I’m hungry, have skipped a meal, and am ready to chow down. BUT, these few minutes can actually be step 1 of your mindful eating practice. Instead of seeing it as waiting, try viewing this time as an opportunity to experience your food visually and through smell. Digestion begins way before we put the first bite of food in our mouths. The simple visual cue can begin the production of saliva, which carries digestive enzymes that help you begin the process of breaking food down. Take these moments to look at, and smell your food. Notice the colors, aroma, textures, and layers. The first bite will be appreciated that much more!

Much better. At the end of a long week, what do you do to relax? I found myself home after a long, busy day today, with my shoulders chillin’ up by ears while I tried to unwind. Sometimes we don’t realize how much tension we hold at the end of a day or week, and how that can impact energy and how we feel. Tensing muscles, shallow breathing, and giving our screens too much face time are all subtle ways we expend precious energy and brain power, and it can take awareness to realize when we need to take a moment and just breathe.

Try these 3 tips at the end of a long day to help give your mind and body a little much needed TLC.

Who else struggles with mornings? 🙋🏽‍♀️

Waking up groggy, hitting snooze one too many times...yep. I hear you loud and clear. Morning energy is one thing many of my patients say they need more of. There are so many reasons why you may be struggling in the mornings - all of which impact sleep quality and ultimately your morning mojo.
To name a few:
⚡️Caffeine and alcohol consumption too late in the day (I’d say anytime after 3PM is my cut off) can leave you too wired for sleep (caffeine) or feeling ready to snooze but waking up throughout the night due to blood sugar imbalance (alcohol)
⚡️What you are before bed - too much sugar or simple starch in the absence of protein, fiber and fat can send your blood sugar on the ride of its life throughout the night, leading to disrupted sleep and difficult mornings
⚡️High intensity exercise too late in the evening may impact cortisol levels and make it more difficult to get a restful sleep
.
You CAN be a morning person...maybe not the kind that goes for a run at 5AM...more like the kind that can get up and accomplish more than putting your keys in the fridge and the milk on your purse?

Despite March being an absolute sh*tshow last year - This is one of my favorite months of the year. There is so much happening - International Women’s Day, the first day of Spring, Mother’s Day (for many around the world), and it’s a month to celebrate Dietitians and the forever fascinating science of nutrition!
.
Let’s get real, nutrition can feel really overwhelming and complicated in today’s world. My goal has always been to meet you where you are in your nutrition journey and be your biggest supporter along the way, because guess what? You CAN eat well, and you CAN feel confident in what you know and cancel out the noise. So, let’s use this month to challenge ourselves, educate ourselves, and of course, appreciate ourselves. There is no such thing as failure when you’re trying your best...and your best can look a hell of a lot different today vs tomorrow.

Repeat after me: My body deserves the best, and I will do my best for it each and every day.

We’re inching closer to the one year mark. You know what I’m talking about...one year since we blew out birthday candles, gave out hugs whether people wanted them or not, and had to just deal when someone stood uncomfortably close to you in a lineup. I know I’m going to have a lot of feelings next month, and whatever comes up, comes up. I saw those closest to me go through their most challenging moments, I experienced loss, I had really good days, and really difficult days. I also persevered. Whatever you feel, give yourself room to feel it. And know, that just as we were the past year, we’re all in it together. Be kind to yourself, be kind to others, and don’t forget to smile!

What are you most proud of yourself for when you reflect on this past year? Where did you show up for yourself? For someone else? How did you show your strength? Let’s celebrate each other, we really do deserve it!✨
