Step 1. Do baseline testing
Step 2. Find out “nothing is wrong”
Step 3. Feeling pressured to pursue treatments for a condition you technically don’t have

Some patients end up feeling forced to go through the fertility process only to find out (years or thousands of dollars later) that they actually might have PCOS, or Endometriosis which was missed with the initial testing, or their thyroid is actually a little slower than it should be, or that their partner actually had low s***m motility for years but they had no idea…and so on….

In my experience unexplained infertility is in many cases caused by multiple smaller problems, instead of one single large problem…

Sometimes a little extra testing in the initial stages can go a long way in the big picture and Patients deserve to have a discussion on how evidence based changes to their lifestyle, diet, stress, physical activity and more can impact the likelihood of conception as well. You need to have these important conversations if you are trying to conceive!

How can we help break this cycle?

I am 100% in support of conventional fertility treatments and the highly trained specialists that provide them for Patients.

But I do not agree with how many patients end up feeling forced to go through the fertility process only to find out (years and thousands of dollars later) that they actually might have PCOS, or Endometriosis which was missed with the initial ultrasound, or their thyroid is actually a little slower than it should be, or that their partner actually had low s***m motility for years but they had no idea…and so on….

Something patients sometimes hear from their Fertility Doctor that can be untrue: “There is nothing that you can do to improve your fertility except the prescribed meds and an ART treatment cycle.”

Firstly, ART (IVF, IUI, and ICSI) are incredible treatments and have helped many patients. But to be clear, the statement that patients can do absolutely nothing is often untrue. It is scientifically incorrect. There is a very large amount of research available just on the NCBI regarding lifestyle, diet, nutrition, supplements, exercise, stress management, fertility acupuncture, additional medications available over the counter (I.e. baby aspirin - over 15 trials on this alone showing how it may increase clinical pregnancy rate with IVF by 7-12%) that are often not discussed with patients. While these may not help all patients, they may help many.

To be clear, over 5000 research papers are published on reproductive medicine a year, just on NCBI.
I have made it part of my job to cover 150-250 new abstracts a week and read anywhere from 5-10 research papers a week on the most innovating and important topics in reproductive medicine for many years now. And every recommendation I make for a patient is coming with evidence to support its role in a treatment plan. So when a Doctor tells a patient that “there is no evidence to support lifestyle, diet, etc” please know that this is not the case. Nobody is reading 5000+ research papers a year.

I simply believe, that before a patient commits to doing 4-5 IVFs, spending anywhere from $50’000-$100’000 CAD, trying for a healthy pregnancy, they should also be working with a trained healthcare professional regarding what evidence-based changes they can be implementing to support their outcomes using lifestyle medicine, nutritional support, updated fertility acupuncture protocols, etc. and to see if these treatments are suitable for them as well, and how to safely include them.

Patients deserve to be in the center of the healthcare team, actively making educated decisions.

*Please speak with your healthcare provider prior to changing or adding any treatments to see if they are right and safe for you*

Dealing with Infertility right now is like dealing with two separate pandemics. It is A LOT to manage!

After successfully supporting hundreds of patients/families during this pandemic with their fertility process and reflecting back on the last 1.5 years, it brings me a lot of joy knowing patients feel and felt comfortable knowing that they have a strong healthcare team looking after their reproductive health with the latest evidence based care!

And remember, you always have the opportunity to take an active role in your fertility! There are many evidence based decisions and changes you can implement to support your treatments!

Sometimes there is that one nutrient that just doesn’t increase on your blood work, even after supplementing for weeks or months! Your supplement is as good as your intestinal absorption of it, and in some cases with digestive health issues absorption of certain nutrients can decrease.

Injectable (intramuscular) can be a beneficial option for many patients in this scenario.

We currently offer Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D intramuscular injections for patients that need a little support getting those levels to optimal ranges 📈
