First Nations Food, Nutrition & Environment Study

First Nations Food, Nutrition & Environment Study A national scope study on the benefits and risks of food and water in First Nations communities. What is the FNFNES?
(5)

The goal of the First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (FNFNES) is to document food security and food safety issues, nutritional quality of the diet and environmental health of First Nations living on reserves. The intent is further to provide information needed for the promotion of healthy environments and healthy foods for health First Nations. A national baseline of background leve

ls of key environmental chemicals of concern and an assessment of diet quality of First Nations are this study’s main objective. Moreover, it also aims to quantify the intake of trace metals through drinking water and the presence of various pharmaceutically-active compounds that are used by First Nations that may find their way into surface waters that are used for fishing or as a source for drinking water. Results of this study will be useful for the development of community-level dietary advice and food guidance for First Nations at the regional level. The information on background exposures to POPs, toxic metals and pharmaceutical products is also essential for First Nations as an enabling foundation for any future food monitoring at the community level. Results of this study are intended to empower communities to make informed decisions to address and mitigate environmental health risks. Using an ecozone sampling framework, the FNFNES aims to gather information with 100 randomly selected First Nation communities across Canada about:

- Current traditional and store bought food use;
- Food security;
- Traditional foods for nutrient values and
environmental chemical hazards;
- Exposure to mercury;
- Drinking water for heavy metals; and
- Surface water for pharmaceutical
metabolites.

Grade 5 science project leads to water quality testing at school in northern Quebec | CBC News

A science project by a group of elementary school students in northern Quebec has focused attention on a potential issue with the quality of water in the local school.

Four Grade 5 students at Mistissini Voyageur Elementary School tested water quality at the source of the community's water, as well as at different parts of the school building. The results of their testing showed a potential issue with the quality of the water at the school.

Wow - this is STUNNING!!!

In 2020, a "Bead Your Province" map of Canada was created by Indigenous artists across the country. It was part of a large scale art project. This map reflects the diversity of Indigenous cultures in mosaic form. 🇨🇦

Happy Summer Solstice and National Indigenous Peoples Day!
06/21/2021

Happy Summer Solstice and National Indigenous Peoples Day!

The Summer Solstice is a day that has been recognized by Indigenous Peoples as a day of celebration and ceremony, marking the longest day of light in the year. National Indigenous Peoples Day was first announced in 1996 as a day to celebrate, recognize and honour the achievements, culture, and history of First Nations, Metis and Inuit in Canada. Across Canada, these days are marked by celebrations, acknowledging the contributions of Indigenous language, traditions, laws, knowledge, songs, dance, and ceremonies.

The FEHNCY team would like to wish everyone a Happy Summer Solstice and all the best for National Indigenous Peoples Day. See links to live activities and events:
