Below we’ve shared an example of a daughter’s experience with NeurGym Rehab’s virtual rehabilitation after her mother suffered a Stroke just prior to the pandemic in 2020.

Many people wonder whether virtual physiotherapy would work for them or their loved one. If there are circumstances that make it difficult to attend our clinic for in-person appointments, consider connecting with our therapists virtually from the comfort of home. With the right virtual direction, it is possible to work on regaining and maintaining balance, strength and mobility to improve functional independence and overall health. We have been providing virtual physiotherapy to many clients since early in the pandemic with excellent results. Our one-on-one virtual physiotherapy is provided throughout Ontario along with the option of equipment rental from our select line of rehabilitative technology to make therapy even more effective.

From re-acquiring strength and mobility that may have declined during the pandemic, to re-learning standing and walking after Stroke, our therapists are here to help. Begin your recovery today. Call 613-523-9905 or visit www.neurogymrehab.com

We are excited to announce our partnership with Neurovine Concussion Recovery Solutions. Neurovine uses an EEG headband and heart rate monitor to get people active and send real-time reporting to concussion patients' mobile devices when they begin to show signs of cognitive and physical overexertion. This means our patients will be able to make informed decisions without fear of recovery regression, and our physiotherapists will be able to prescribe and keep track of our patients’ recovery. With Neurovine's data and our expertise, concussion patients will have the support needed to recover.

Get in touch to learn more about incorporating Neurovine technology into your rehab recovery.

Balance & Control Training with the NeuroGym® Bungee Mobility Trainer

Here’s a throwback of a video we love: Our Director of Physiotherapy Tiffany Tremblay working with a client on balance training. When mobility is impaired, the brain is often still capable of re-learning to improve stability and balance.

Enabling safe, dynamic balance training is an essential part of effective fall prevention training. Our clients use the NeuroGym® Bungee Mobility Trainer to practice taking the protective side/backward steps necessary to regain their balance during dynamic exercises.

This type of rehabilitation is not possible to do safely without the kind of mobile body-weight support system provided by this equipment. It allows for more ‘real-life’ practice than overhead harnesses and offers the opportunity to safely practice endless mobility exercises.

For many years, it was believed that improvement in physical abilities post-stroke was limited to about 6 months – 1 year. So much has been learned about ‘neuroplasticity’ (the brain’s ability to adapt through changes in the neural pathways and synapses), and it is now clear that improvement is still possible many years post-stroke. For this improvement to happen, it is important for rehab therapy to optimize the possibility for neuroplastic changes to take place. NeuroGym®’s techniques and tools are designed to do this by ensuring that:

1. Movement is patient-initiated (passive movement will do little to advance neuroplasiticty)

2. Speed sensitive – moving to specific targets at varied speeds (an element of goal-directed movement)

3. Intensive – changing neural pathways requires extensive practice – we have the equipment and experience to make this enjoyable and effective

📣NEW AT NEUROGYM📣: PoNS Treatment (Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator)

PoNS therapy involves the use of a wearable device that provides gentle electrical pulses to the surface of the tongue, stimulating cranial nerves. The increased neural plasticity, when paired with appropriate physical therapy, has shown improvements to balance and gait in mild-to-moderate Traumatic Brain Injury and mild-to-moderate Multiple Sclerosis.

Watch this video about a Durham, ON woman who used PoNS treatment in her recovery from brain injury.

We miss all our clients and hope that you are staying safe during this pandemic. When NeuroGym Rehab is able to re-open, we will be contacting everyone to re-schedule. In the meantime, if you have questions or would like to contact us, don't hesitate to leave us a message at 613-523-9905 . Best wishes from everyone at NeuroGym!

The health and well being of our clients and staff is of paramount importance to us. We want to assure you that we have been following closely all recommendations from Federal, Provincial and local Ottawa Public Health Authorities, and have maximized hygiene and safety protocols at NeuroGym Rehabilitation for everyone's protection. The corona virus (COVID-19) situation in Ottawa continues to evolve, however, and after careful consideration we have decided that it is prudent to close the clinic effective Monday March 16, 2020 for the next three weeks. We wish to contribute to the collective effort to limit the spread of this virus.

If it is safe to do so, NeuroGym Rehabilitation will re-open Monday April 6, 2020. We will, of course continue to adhere to the health and safety recommendations of the local authorities and will delay re-opening if necessary. If we can re-open on April 6th, you will be contacted prior to your next appointment date for confirmation. We will post updates here and on our telephone answering system.

We wish you a restful few weeks and hope that by contributing to the collective effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, we will all stay safe and be able to return to our regular routines and work as soon as possible.
