Not Trying Too Hard to Meditatet

People often strive for specific outcomes when they mediate and this can get in the way. While it is important to have intentions, letting go of wanting things to be different and letting go of expectation can really help.

Hi Everyone,
In the last session we explored the 2nd factor of awakening - investigation. It is the non-intellectual understanding of the Dharma - not based on someone else’s opinions, but directly and intuitively. As part of investigation, we want to directly realize the impermanent, unsatisfactory, and selfless nature of each of our moments of experience. Mindfulness is the foundation of meditation practice and investigation is the core of the arising of insight and wisdom. The ZOOM video of the talk and guided meditation is available HERE.

To join the Zoom meditation sessions every Thursday simply go to: https://zoom.us/j/146896549
If you have a problem accessing, please email me.
Meeting ID: 146 896 549
Telephone call-in is not available.

In the next session I will talk wisely bringing effort or energy to our mindfulness or insight meditation practice. You may have been told not to strive for any results as you practice, but wondered how you can apply effort if you are not striving. Perhaps you are wondering how to balance non-striving and effort. Or maybe you see that wanting awakening has pulled your practice off-track. These are a few of the questions that i will discuss in the next talk.

The current situation reminds us to look deeply at our inter-contentedness and our inherent love and compassion. Please everyone stay safe and send lovingkindness to all those who are suffering.

All are welcome, both beginning and experience mediators, to our weekly sitting group. It is a drop-in group led by Steven Hick and occasionally by other experienced practitioners.

Dr. Rick Hanson, author of Hardwiring Happiness and Buddha’s Brain, argues that when there is no consistent self, it means that we don’t have to take everything so personally. That is, our internal thoughts are only thoughts and don’t define us. External events are only external events and aren’t happening to us personally. Or as Tara Brach says, our thoughts are “real, but not true.”

Love vs. Attachment - Jack Kornfield

A helpful article for those inspired to make meditation their whole life and not just something done in the morning as a formal practice.

Love vs. Attachment The near enemy of love is attachment. Attachment masquerades as love. It says, “I will love this person because I need them.” Or, “I’ll love you if you’ll love me back. I’ll love you, but only if you will be the way I want.” This isn’t love at all – it is attachment – and attachm...
