Think of a free radical as a molecule that is missing an electron. Because it wants to become stable, it can take an electron from another molecule.
That can start a chain reaction:
Free radical → takes an electron → damages another molecule → creates another unstable molecule → more reactions
Your body actually makes free radicals naturally when it:
Produces energy
Fights infections
Processes certain chemicals
Is exposed to things like smoke, pollution, or UV radiation
Free radicals aren't always bad. Your body needs some of them for normal functions, including immune defense.
The problem is when there are too many free radicals compared with the body's ability to control them. This is called oxidative stress.
Where antioxidants come in
Antioxidants can help by giving up an electron to a free radical without becoming unstable themselves. This helps stop the chain reaction.
A very simple way to picture it:
Free radical = a spark
Oxidative stress = too many sparks
