Does anyone know if other hospitals in the County do reconciliation activities such as this? Isnāt it remarkable?
As part of our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we have a continuing series of Indigenous education and reconciliation learning opportunities for team members at DRDH, led by the Mashkiwizii Manido Foundation.
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an Indigenous-led, hands-on learning activity that explores the historical and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Blankets are placed on the floor to symbolize land, as people can walk through the evolution timeline of Indigenous peoples. After the exercise, participants can reflect, listen to one another, and share their insights.
DRDH is keeping our promise to act on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canadaās Calls to Action through our education, specifically around Indigenous history, treaties, and healthcare justice, guided by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Reconciliation requires more than acknowledgement. It requires continued learning and action, so we can grow and learn from our mistakes. Our healthcare team is dedicated to continuing to learn about the history and current barriers surrounding our system so we can provide compassionate, culturally safe care to Indigenous people.
Miigwetch Margaret, Joanne, and Julianna, for sharing your knowledge and wisdom to guide us through this impactful experience.
