🇩🇴 A little rain (okay, a LOT of rain) wasn’t going to stop this visit.

While in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, we had the opportunity to visit Casa Colombia, a highly reputable brand known for its Colombian compression garments.

As someone who specializes in advanced postoperative care, I know how important proper compression can be throughout the recovery process. But there’s also value in getting to know the brands, the people, and the operations behind the products we work with.

During our visit, we got a closer look at where Fajas_Casa_Colombia orders are processed, organized, and fulfilled, and had the opportunity to connect with the team behind the brand.

These are the kinds of experiences I appreciate most about travelling for professional development. It’s not always about sitting in a classroom or learning another technique. Sometimes it’s about building relationships, having conversations, and gaining a better understanding of the industry beyond the treatment room.

Another experience to add to my time in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

Not all postoperative complications happen in the operating room. Some develop during recovery.

Let’s talk about FAJA BURNS 🥵

Following liposuction, tummy tucks and other body contouring procedures, compression garments (Fajas) are often used to manage swelling and support healing. But tighter does NOT mean better.

This photo shows significant bruising and discolouration. Pressure or friction from a Faja may be contributing, but not all bruising is a burn, and the cause can’t be confirmed from a photo alone.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

A poorly fitted Faja, tight seams, rolled edges or repeated rubbing can place excessive pressure on the skin. After surgery, swelling and reduced sensation may make irritation harder to notice before it worsens.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT?

✔️ Check the fit. Compression should be even, never painfully tight or digging into your skin.

✔️ Inspect your skin daily, especially around the shoulders, underarms, waist, groin and seams.

✔️ Consider protective barriers ONLY with your surgeon’s approval. Correctly positioned lipo foams may help prevent rubbing. In certain situations, a clean, unscented maxi pad may work as a temporary friction barrier—but extra padding under a tight garment can make pressure worse.

✔️ Watch for warning signs: increasing pain, persistent redness, blistering, dark patches or worsening bruising.

✔️ Don’t ignore skin damage. Contact your surgical team promptly rather than tightening your Faja or trying to pad over the problem.

THE TAKEAWAY?

Postoperative care is about more than reducing swelling or achieving a certain shape. It’s about protecting healing tissue and recognizing when something isn’t right.

Your Faja should SUPPORT your recovery, not create another problem.

📌 Save this for your recovery.

POST-OP COLLECTIVE RETREAT | DAYS 3 & 4 🇩🇴

Two very different days, both equally memorable.

DAY 3 | A Little Time to Recharge 🌴

After an incredible start to our retreat, we enjoyed our only official downtime on the beautiful shores of Boca Chica. A much-needed opportunity to slow down, soak up the Caribbean sunshine, and enjoy a little of what the Dominican Republic has to offer beyond the operating room.

DAY 4 | Recovery, Connections & Education

Our morning began with a visit to Luxury Recovery RD, where we had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Raquel.

Having visited recovery houses internationally before, I always appreciate experiencing different approaches to postoperative care. What stood out immediately was Raquel’s warmth and genuine compassion. She has that nurturing, motherly presence that makes you feel welcome the moment you walk through the doors. Her dedication to her patients and the environment she’s created truly shines. 🤍

Raquel then graciously treated us to a delicious lunch at a local favourite before accompanying us to Casa Colombia, where we got a closer look at their compression garments and local distribution operations.

From there, we headed to our second hands-on training session with Liss Massages, continuing to refine our techniques, exchange knowledge, and gain valuable insight into postoperative care practices in the Dominican Republic.

We wrapped up another eventful day with dinner, great conversations, and meaningful connections.

One of my favourite things about international education is that the learning extends far beyond the classroom. It’s in the people we meet, the places we visit, and the different perspectives we bring home to our own practices.

And we weren’t finished just yet…
