This photo was taken from the upper level of the Stalker Building, now home to The Scotsman Inn. More than a century later, so many of the buildings along Water Street are still standing, including the four-storey YMCA building on the right.

It’s easy to look at an old photograph and notice what has changed. But this one makes me think about all the lives that have passed through this little stretch of town: the people who opened their shops in the morning, greeted a neighbour on the sidewalk, worked hard for their families, and called Pictou home.

Those buildings have watched generations come and go. Somehow, looking down Water Street, you can still feel that connection to everyone who came before us.

And I can’t help wondering what the harbour looked like from the top floor of the YMCA. What a view that must have been and still is.
