Day 6 - Monday

A team of doctors and nurses came to do their assessment in the morning. When the lead doctor heard how bad I was when I came into the hospital she said I wasnt going home that day no matter what. Because of the severity of what I have, she felt I needed to be monitored longer. So another night for me!

Dr Zarkovic came in later on and said I am doing pretty good on my meds. For the few days prior I was receiving hydrocortisone by IV every 6 hours. She wanted me to switch over to take it myself and monitor how I do. So in the afternoon I started my first hydrocortisone by pill form instead of an IV.

The Nutritionist also came and talked to me about eating. She gave me a list of foods and how to incorporate eating properly back into my life, including eating carbs again but not too fast. Prior to getting really sick, I had adopted a no processed sugar, low carb diet. I was also intermittent fasting. I loved this way of eating and was doing well. It is very healthy and really good for cancer patients. But that all had to change now. It was very important I started to put weight back on. I also need to eat when I take my meds. So began adopting my new way of eating for the next little while. It was sure nice to be able to ask her questions and receive the information from her. We came up with a plan together that worked with what I wanted and also what I needed. So another shout out to Alex the Nutritionist. She is an absolute doll and very helpful πŸ™πŸ’›

Day 5 - Sunday

I was still getting a steady stream of IV bags to keep my hydration up. Other than one small blip in er, I had been on it 24/7. So far all of my medications had been through IV as well.
I had been on the new meds for a couple of days now and it was helping so much. Saturday I ate 3 meals and snacks, and no nausea or throwing up! Same as Sunday. My friend told me that you could tell I had been really sick because I was actually enjoying all the hospital food πŸ˜‚

My gluclose seemed to be going up and down a bit, but wasnt a huge concern as it was stable. So no insulin shots for me! My body was able to maintain on its own without them! Yay! I love good news 😊

My vein was no longer holding my IV and started to really hurt. So once again, IV out and new one in. This one went in my hand though. I was hapoy because it hurts less than the elbow and it meant I was hydrated enough to use the veins in my hand again!
As the new one was going in a Code Blue went off. Next thing we knew all the nurses came running to my room!! The nurse and I were so shocked! We were nowhere near the button and couldn't figure out what was going on. After alot of back & forth, we found out someone was cleaning and hit the button from their station. So after alot of confusion, discussions and scaring people, it was a just a mistake. But the nurses were all sure on it! Good to know they come super fast in an emergency!

The Oncology Dr on call came and went through my diagnosis again and reiterated the importance of my meds, taking good care of myself and keeping my stress levels down. The nurse said I would be coming off of my fluids that afternoon to see if I could keep my hydration up on my own.
Originally they thought I would be able to go home Monday, but now they wanted me to stay Monday to monitor how well I could maintain things on my own. As much as I missed home, I cant complain at all about the care I received. I was exactly where I needed to be.

Day 4 - Saturday

It's funny how things can change in your life. As I am sure its the same with everyone, we want to put up pictures of ourselves when we look our best. We analyze everything about them first. Sometimes we retake them over and over. But there is something about this picture that feels good to me. No make up, hair sticking up, I hadn't showered in over a week and I am wearing a hospital gown not a nice outfit. But this day was the day I finally felt better than I had in months. The color was finally back in my face, my eyes got brighter again and I was just thankful to be alive.

I was lucky enough to have a window on my side of the room. That day I ate lunch by the window. The nurses joked it wasnt much of view, but the sun was shining and the sky was blue and for once I didnt feel sick. I was so happy to sit at that window and not have to force my food down while stressing it would come back up. I ate my entire lunch, and kept it down, which was something I hadn't been able to do for over a month. I even had the dessert! πŸ˜‹

I felt the need to take a picture. After when I looked at it, I just felt happy. I looked past all the normal things that would have kept me from posting a picture like this in the past. This was the real me. The raw me.The women I fought like hell to be. I have overcome so many things in my life and I had just overcome another huge obstacle. I fought for my health and beat the odds again. And I kind of felt like it was day one of my new life.

Day 3 - post 6

I finally got the word I was moving out of er! Around 6:30pm a room finally opened up on the Oncology ward, otherwise known as 5D. Now if you have ever been unfortunate enough to spend time on the cancer floor, you will know the nurses are amazing! They are caring and kind, are there for anything you need and explain everything to you. I was very happy to be there and knew I was in good hands. I also was fully under my Oncologist now. An absolutely amazing Dr who genuinely cares about me and my health. For the first time in days, I felt more at ease.

We did a full intake once I got up there. They also weighed me. Thats when I realized how much weight I had lost. Now I was going to share that with you guys, but I would never want another women to think I was body shaming them because of their weight if you are a thin stature. So while the number is not important, what I will say is I was far to thin for what I would like. I had lost about 18 pounds in 5 weeks. Thats also when I was told my body had ate all my muscle. Which makes sense as I had become so weak I literally couldn't even open a drink for myself.

Fortunately by the time I was moved to the cancer ward, I was also advised they would just monitor my gluclose before I had to administer any insulin. I was happy that insulin wasn't something I needed to worry about.

If any nurses from 5D see this, I want to let you know how fabulous you all are, how much I appreciate you and your hard work and how you all make patients feel much better in a scary and uncertain time. Oncology nurses are some of the best nurses I have ever encountered. Grateful and thankful for you all, especially the ones that I had directly 🩷

Day 3 - post 5

I always find it interesting the way things come about. I had heard many times now my right arm is not to be used for IV's due to my surgery and also having some lymphnodes removed. But I have never asked why. So I asked my nurse and she explained that with my lymphatic system is not working the way that it is supposed too, so it is not good and it can cause fluid retention and build up in my arm. As she is explaining this to me, i'm not really paying attention to my arm. All of a sudden, she grows very quiet and then looks at me. And says, "Cara, is your arm bothering you?". I said "Yes, it was a little bit. Im assuming it was just from the IV". I turned to look at my arm to see what she was talking about. That's when I realized that I had that exact problem, but in the alternate arm. Due to my veins, not being great at all, the IV had fallen out of my vein. My entire elbow had ballooned right up!! I burst out laughing and said, "Ohhh so this is what you meant??" She didnt find it as funny as I did lol She was alot more panicky, assuring me it was all going to be ok lol
Im quite sad I didnt think to take a picture to show you how big my arm actually got. It was pretty wild to see lol But just like the nurse said, it absorbed into my system and over time the ballooning went down. But the irony that it happened just when I was asking was pretty funny lol And now I got to see first hand what will happen if they use the right side! Lol

(Not my pic. Just a reference. Mine was a bit bigger and in my elbow and upper arm)

Day 3 - post 4

I started taking hydrocortisone via IV. Due to the adrenal crisis my body was in the first dose was 100mg and then I received 50mg hourly until my body started to stabilize. This also caused my gluclose to spike. This is a side effect of the medication. The nurses advised I needed to start taking insulin and would continue to do so on a sliding scale while my gluclose would be monitored. I was obviously not excited to do that. The last thing I wanted to do was add more onto my full plate of health issues. However I did find out later in the day they decided to not give me insulin and just closely monitor my gluclose levels and then decide from there how to proceed.

I had overheard one of the nurses say I was anorexic. I was so offended! I was not anorexic! I ate. Every day. I thought anorexic people were people who starved themselves for days on end. Funny how we get an idea in our head. My assumptions were incorrect. Anorexia comes in different forms. And unfortunately, to my dismay, I was classified anorexic. Not by choice. But that is irrelevant when it comes to a diagnosis. This was a good lesson to clear those preconceived notions from my mind. Always lessons in everything 😊
And this issue was at least easy to fix!

Day 3 - post 3 - the diagnosis

So after I found out that the cancer was not back, I dont think I can explain the relief I felt. I was so scared and so worried. What great news!! I was so excited!!

That was short lived though. The news of the new diagnosis came next.
My oncologist told me my adrenal glands no longer work properly on their own. My body no longer produces its own cortisol and no longer produces a hormone. My body is permanently damaged from doing Immunotherapy. This nearly cost me my life. This means medication every day for the rest of my life.

It is extremely serious and very rare. My oncologist said in all her years practicing she has only seen this once or twice.
If I get sick, have a fever, miss my medications or have high stress, it depletes what the medication gives me which will put me right back into my body shutting down immediately. I got lucky this time. My Dr knew enough to send me to the er. Now if any of those things happen and/or any of the symptoms arise again, I am to go directly to the hospital and hope they can get it under control before its too late. For the second time this year, my life completely changed.

My oncologist looked me dead in the eye and said, "Cara if you hadn't come in when you did, you would have died soon". I was literally days away from no longer being here. That hit me hard. To be completely honest this hit harder than the cancer news. With cancer I knew I could fight. There was hope I could beat it and hopefully be healthy again. But with this, there is no fighting. There is no recovering. There is just this new diagnosis that I have to live with for the rest of my life.

Day 3 - Fri - post 2

I was still in the er. I was switched over to a new med to help with my stomach issues and nausea. My BP was still low, but was a bit more stable than the previous 2 days. Although it was still a concern.

My oncologist took the time to come see me in the er. I asked her if the cancer is back. She gave me a weird look and asked why I thought that. I explained what the er Dr had said. She was annoyed and said he never should have said that to me. She said I dont have cancer again, I dont need a biopsy and I don't need a scope. She said knew what I had after he told her 2 of my symptoms. Thats why she ordered the tests she did.

So now I realize he assumed because I previously had cancer it must be that and wrote me off. Because "he wasnt a cancer Dr" he was unwilling to help me at all.
Even though I had so many health issues that needed to be dealt with. Issues I soon learned were far more serious than I thought. And in my opinion it was also really sh*tty of him to say, and let me believe, the cancer was back.

So good news friends! The cancer is NOT back!!

(Picture of my fabulous, incredibly brilliant, reliable and caring Oncologist that I was blessed with)

Day 3 - Friday - post 1

The new oncologist came to see me again & told me there was still no room available for me, but people usually leave Fridays so something may come up soon. I was again grateful he took the time to come see me in the er. Oncologists are extremely busy people on their own wards and floors. So to take the time to see me was very appreciated.

He also explained more what was happening since I came in, so now I was understanding a little bit more. I also told him about passing out again.

He told me he was recommending me to stay in the hospital until Monday, but needed to confer with my Dr first as its her call. She is truly the busiest person I have ever seen in my life. I was grateful I had him as a second really good oncologist though. If it cant be her, I am happy had him.

Day 2 - post 7

After while of resting I called the nurse. I still needed to go to the bathroom! Thats where I was going in the first place! Lol So since I wasnt able to get up, I was given a commode. It was placed beside my bed and the chair so I only had to get up, turn, and then lower myself down. I started to go and as soon as I did the bottom fell out of the commode πŸ™ˆ You guys I truly dont understand how these things always happen to me, but somehow they do hahaha I have learned to laugh about it all by now because these things have happened to me my whole life! Lol

The smart male nurse (yep what a time to get a male hahaha) had put a thick paper towel inside of a garbage bag for me to use in the commode. After the initial shock and laughter subsided, what do I do next? Out of sheer habit, I get down on my knees, even though i am not supposed to be moving and start to clean up. Always the helpful one πŸ™ˆ πŸ˜‚ Then I remembered I was not supposed to be up at all. I got back in bed and pushed the call button. He came in & I explained what happened. That poor soul did so well, but you could tell that was something he didnt want to deal with that night lol After a long couple of days it did make me laugh right loud. Even in an emergency crisis my life is unpredictable and entertaining! And if any of you have spent any time with me, you know things like this are fairly normal in my life lol

So please laugh along with the craziness because we need to find some humor in this story! πŸ€ͺ
